ICT Qualification for Primary Y5/Y6 Children

Hi,

 

I've been asked to look into the possibility of older primary school children gaining a recognised ICT qualification to leave primary school with.

 

Does anyone know of anything that might fit the bill? I've had a little look into level 1 ECDL award which looked kind of doable. The school would probably want to be able to accredit the module themselves if it were possible.

 

Any ideas would be very welcome.

Slightly different but Manchester University hold an animation competition every year - run by a guy called Toby Howard who I went to school with (he wouldn't let me play Daleks when we were 4 - never forgiven him!)

 

I used to get my kids to enter it - never won anything but they found it exciting

If you are a GSuite school, there is a new GSuite certification for students, but it might be a bit advanced for Y5/6 and it does have a cost. https://teachercenter.withgoogle.com/certification_gsuite.

 

A 'recognised ICT qualification' gained aged 11 is unlikely have any more impact on a pupil than a school produced certification, so personally I'd prefer to avoid the expense.

I'd agree to the expense avoidance in a normal school.

However, some schools feel, for whatever reason, that impressing the parents is critical so something like this would help with the concept.

 

I came across this an Independent school I visited ages ago. The 'normal' state school I had worked in all had onlt B&W printers for the kids as colour ones where far too expensive at the time. This school however had a colour laser in every IT room. They felt this was essential for printing out work for the kids to take home - to make the fee paying parents feel they were getting good value for money

 

I have also know state school with the same attitude - feeling that having a high quality reputation in the local area means that they get 'higher quality' applicants for Year 7 - one of these school was state school that still had an entrance exam - in Wales where there are no Grammar schools - no idea how they got away with that idea!!

Have you seen IDEA? It's like the Duke of Edinburgh award but from the Duke of York with bronze, silver and gold awards for that help develop digital, enterprise and employability skills for free http://www.idea.org.ik

I guess this isn't a qualification as such, but a digital certification from Microsoft... But what about the Microsoft Digital Literacy Certificate? If when they pass, you can print out the online certification or view it here. And if you want it recognised (as such), you can get the school course accredited with CPD (but I don't know if there is a cost, and if there is one how much it is).

I’ve enjoyed doing this myself and two of my Year 6 children have passed Bronze & Silver. Gold not out yet.
