4 Pin Molex to UK Mains

Is it possible to plug a 4 pin molex connector straight in to a UK mains socket. If so, what kind of connector/adapter do I need? I'd like to plug a 200mm system fan I've got lying around in and cool our office down! Edited May 7, 2008 by Zoom7000

Do not under any circumstances, even if you are a southern softy West Ham Fan:) attempt to connect a 12vdc system fan in to the 240VAC UK Mains. I really hope this was a joke question and not serious but if it wasn't please leave well alone!

Not directly, as they are for use with 12V and 3V powered devices. You'd need some form of AC-DC adapter to power the fan.

I should have stressed that I was asking if there is an adapter of some sort (or should I say transformer) that will throttle down the voltage to not fry myself and the fan!

Molex is the 4 pin connector used to power standard PATA IDE devices.

oh yes...looks for external hard disk molex power packs. I have one in my bag..came with a USB to IDE converter.

Couldn't you just scavenge (spelling) an old PSU and sit it next to it?

i'd just get hold of an old AT PSU and use that... bit of cable tie/shrink and jobs done...

 

or just buy a 12" desk fan...

Cheap as chips way (I use this in my shed to cool it down on summers evenings.)

 

Buy a very cheap 12V power supply, the kind you get from wilkos for £3.

 

Make up a connector or alternatively just solder and heat shrink sleeve it directly to the transformer lead, job done.

yeah i think in some places they're called cash converters... my local one sells other stuff other than what people bring in to sell... but you can defo buy desk fans for under 5... tesco's and asda probably will have some soon... either that or ask family if they have any old ones you can have...

Heh..I got a scalextric from one for a few quid..belting fun. In fairness, I just had a "want to relive my youth" moment..

 

I've got a 120mm fan in the car I mean to use on my desk..Steve has a desk fan, but it's just so "non-geek", I won't consider it. A central 120mm and a couple of satellite "ex case" 80's, an ATX PSU or a hacked USB lead, and job jobbed.
