Dell Poweredge 1800

Hi All,

 

Earlier today, our Poweredge1800 server which runs MS Exchange 2003/Secondary-DC started beeping, very obnoxiously.

 

1 of 4 HDD has "degraded". However removing the drive, the server is still beeping.

 

Believe me when I say this, its MAJORLY ANNOYING.

 

Anyone know how to turn it off?

have you tried putting the drive back in? it may be ok once its been re-integrated into the array. On the servers I've dealt with in the past the only way to shut them up was to go into the raid bios and find the silence option.

I guess it will depend upon the disk controller; On a PE4600 with PERC4 RAID subsystem with DELL Openmanage Array Manager, you can enable/disable the alarm from there, IIRC select card, right mouse button disable alarm will do it.

Use Dell OpenManage Server Administrator. Under Alert Management tab, there is an option to turn the beep off.

We had the exact problem a while ago. As posted already the Dell Open Manage set up was the answer. One raid disk had gone out of sync - using the Dell software a rebuild seemed to solve the problem.

We had the same problem on a 2900, it turned out to be a disk that had gone.

We had a similar problem on a 2600... one disk died which in turn caused the controller to go crazy and fail another disk and knock the array offline.

 

Suffice it to say - it was a fun time trying to get the array back - call Dell and tell them that their disk was dead.

 

Credit though once they agreed it was dead - we got 2 new ones sent out which arrived the following morning.

hi as in the rest of thread we just had this problem of a degraded disk in

a RAID array, and the poweredge 1800 beeping. Yes Dell Open Manage both allowed turning off beep and rebuilding the disk but although the indicator light on that disk is green now and the rebuilding went to 100%

1. the display in Dell Open Manage still says that disk is degraded

2.the column under "available RAID disk space" says 0GB for all 3 disks

though there is 30 GB altogether actually free

3. event viewer is still showing warnings (event ID 2094)from server adminstrator saying "predictive failure reported-Array disk 0:1, controller 0, channel 0

users have been continuing to use the network throughout this

any idea if we should believe the green light or the Dell Open Manage

server administrator at this point?
