[sims] Can't edit quicklettertemplate.doc

Quicklettertemplate.doc always opens Read-Only. It's in "C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS .net". Effective Access says I have full control, and I am an administrator of the computer. What (probably very obvious) bit am I missing please?

Is the file locked for editing by another user? check open files in computer management.

Nope.

 

Don't know if it's relevant, Windows 10 LTSC 2019 and Word 2016.

 

Is anyone else's not read-only?

I can't remember where I read it, but if I remember correctly it's an MS security feature. MSOffice won't allow editing of files in C:\Program Files (x86) or any sub-directory. If you want to edit it, copy it to your My Documents, make the changes and save then copy it back to the original location.

If only SIMS worked in a sensible way and had that template they tell you to edit, somewhere you could edit it!

To be fair to Capita, Windows 95 didn't have that restriction

Btw, that MS security feature is UAC.

 

Program Files, the Windows folder and the root of C:\ are protected locations.

Back on topic- I think what I did last time someone actually wanted to use it was to make a copy - do my changes and then get the network administrator to force a copy onto each of the users PCs.

 

It's an archaic system.

That's what I do too. Have the QuickLetterTemplate stored in a central location on the network and then use GPP to automatically copy it to the correct location whenever it is updated.

 

It's an archaic system.

Everything about SIMS is archaic.
