Good afternoon all

We've had a request from a teacher who said they would recommend Kiddle as a search engine for younger children.

Has anyone had any prior experience with this search engine and are there any recommendations that you can make based on this?

Search results appear to come from Google after being filtered.

Many thanks

Had this request from DH at my last school

School policy changed so that all searches go through Kiddle by default - caused havoc

far fewer search result came up - it seemed to miss out a lot of sites that would have been useful

teacher and kids complained

result was that the kid ended up searching for google then using that as usual so it just annoyed people and made everyone add another step to all searches

Mind you - if he had told people other than me that he had told me to do it that may have helped!!

So likely that it was a communication problem - especially would have been a good idea to give the teachers some warning rather than just having their computer suddenly behave differently the next day

We were asked about this recently (I wonder what publication it was in?) and we looked at it and were unimpressed. Ads filled most of the landing screen, so you had scroll past, the results were incredibly simplistic and there was nowhere that stated what sites were allowed or not, so while we were teaching kids to check sources and not restrict themselves to possible echo chambers or staying within their conformational bias the search engine would wall them in but not tell you where the walls are. Oh and any words it felt were bad it jut gave you an error rather than any proper feedback.

Nice idea but badly executed I felt

I compared it to the 2 I've been requested to set up at 2 of my sites. Stormy Daniels:

Kiddle: No Results.

KidRex: No Results. However, I did have had to blacklist some of the places it serves ads from!

Swiggle: Hello, Stormy! Nothing too bad on the first page of results, but you probably wouldn't want anything at all.
