the_one_that_cant Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 (edited) Just a quick one. Replacing skirting in the home, one old piece has a single outlet cut out of the board. Not doing this for the new one. Spoke with O/H and she said we don't need that outlet. Looked at it, can see the power cable powering it, too shorty to move anywhere else. There is also what looks to be another wire going to another socket (running off it) so if I disconnect that then I am worried I will lose power to a double outlet that I use. Is there anything I can use to couple the cables up to regulation standard? Also bear in mind that there is not a lot of space behind it. Possibly able to use an in-line push-fit cable connector if one is suitable. Any ideas people? Cheers Edited March 7, 2019 by the_one_that_cant Piccies
bald_pig Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 sockets run in a ring, so you shouldn't lose power anywhere when you disconnect it. I'd reconnect them with a terminal block though 1

Andrew_C Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 Must be 30A*, must be enclosed, must protect against "foreseeable mechanical damage". And you do need to maintain the ring. Can you get under the floor (assuming this is where cables run)? A proper junction box there would be best. * minimum

If you want rid of it i would personally get a 32A terminal to join them up and just wrap them up in electrical tape. Ideally you would replace the cable or put in a blanking plate. But using a terminal will work also just a bit more messy!

jmak Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 I'd try *really* hard not to put anything behind a skirting board especially if there's no electrical fitting to give the poor soul who comes after you a clue that there's something hiding. I'm therefore slightly concerned about what direction the wires to the right of the socket go.... Are there any electrical fittings either vertically above or horizontally in line with the fitting you're removing? At the least, I'd take those cables below the floor to join them. 1
the_one_that_cant Posted March 8, 2019 Author Posted March 8, 2019 Nothing vertical, and nothing strictly horizontal. About 15 foot either side (this is part of a previous wall separating two rooms - now just remnants of a thoroughfare) is double plugs’ at either end of the house (same wall) but chimney breasts on between on both main walls. (Will try and get photos shortly - be easier to see, than this explanation). It will be tomorrow, in daylight, that I will be tackling it. Thanks for the help and advice people.

Do not do this its no longer allowed/ and was never best practice if your just going to join it and then burry it in the wall whatever you use has to now be a maintance free connector which rules out chock block and the old screw fix junction boxes , grab a wago box and 3 40amp wagos joint them pop them in the box and stick it in the hole they are maintance free and that's allowed by the regs, Wagos are cheap on amazon or ebay if your realy stuck drop me a pm those 99p junction boxes are only rated to 24 amps so they are no use on a ring main , but fine in a lighting circuit
the_one_that_cant Posted March 10, 2019 Author Posted March 10, 2019 Well I couldn’t get under the floorboards so I got the wago box and found it too big for what i needed. Instead I used the box from the lighting one I got, but put the wago blocks in that instead and it now fits perfectly. Thanks for your help people.
