tg12 Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Not sure how many of you watch Formula E, but they announced this morning that it'll be finally be returning to London, but with a very unusual circuit, running both inside and outside the ExCeL! It all sounds rather bonkers and I'm looking forward to it, especially having been there often for BETT etc! Initially I thought it would be using the car park underneath the building but from what I've seen from 3D maps, they'll be running into the south exhibition hall!
DeGrimmy Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 I don't follow Formula E, but I do enjoy motorsports and I saw this on Twitter. It looks really cool! I might look into how to watch it at some point. 1
bald_pig Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 That sounds bonkers, I'm in! I always assumed they would end up doing something around canary wharf. 1
tg12 Posted March 5, 2019 Author Posted March 5, 2019 It's funny, the rumour about this has been going for nearly 3 years now, ever since they were forced to can the Battersea race. It'd all gone quiet but at BETT this year, I sat on the platform at Prince Regent looking at the road highlighted on the track map wondering where the circuit would have been. Hadn't realised it was going to become reality!

tg12 Posted March 5, 2019 Author Posted March 5, 2019 I wonder where they will fit the grandstands! I am a little worried about that, there will be large amount of the circuit not really accessible. At a guess, there'll definitely be stuff inside the ExCeL for the start/finish, maybe more stuff towards the back of the circuit where there's space past Prince Regent before it turns back to ExCeL.
hardtailstar Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Im pretty sure they have had a car race on a similar circuit around the ExCel before. I cant even remember what it was for. May have been go karts at exhibition I was at! 1
jthompson Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 I've been enjoying the races so far this year. Now that it's on BBC I find it easier to not miss them.
AJWhite1970 Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 With that proposed circuit, tyres would be interesting if it rained....
XiJ Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 I can’t get into Formula E. But this sounds a bit crazy and I’d like to see it.
tg12 Posted March 5, 2019 Author Posted March 5, 2019 With that proposed circuit, tyres would be interesting if it rained.... Formula E runs all weather tyres, but I’m wondering about the surface inside the exhibition hall. I hope it’s not a hard shiny floor! If it’s concrete, it should be slightly better even with the water being dragged in.

I reckon they must have some tarmac overlay thing they will be using, looking at the circuit it goes across grass at one point as well. Does anyone know if this will be the circuit with the highest elevation change? I reckon it must be, seeing as it goes up and down a level!

Yeah they do use a recyclable tarmac in places where they need to add in, but if it's just plain concrete inside the ExCeL, I don't think they'll bother. The cars seem quite happy to run on a mix of surfaces. As for elevation, it may well be. Montreal had a bit of a hill, I seem to remember.
