Dos_Box Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 I love my retro gaming and currently have an Xbox One S and Switch (and PC obviously). The only problem is that a lot of retro game collections, primarily of arcade and older console classics, were only ever released or ported to/on the Playstation in it's various forms as well as schmups which are now regarded as 'classic' shooters What I'm looking at doing is either getting a PS3 or PS2 (with HDMI adapter), both of which can be had for very little outlay, so I can enjoy some old gaming joy in my living room. I'm not going down the MAME route as I want to do this in my living room on the TV and, lets face it, MAME can be a total faff as I have found out many, many times in the past. Anyway, back to the title of the thread, are any of you still using a PS2 or 3 and how are you getting on with them these days? In particular I know that some PS3's are backwards compatible, but are there any issues? I also note that I may have to jailbreak particular PS3's to get the backwards compatibility!
3s-gtech Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 I've just recently been using my PS2 to play through my Ace Combat games of that generation. Using a component cable, it really did look great on a 43" TV. Avoid composite! I have a couple of PS2 slims that I picked up for peanuts - one only works upside down. They're pretty reliable though, if you stick to genuine pads and memory cards. For PS1, I can use my PS4 which plays the games natively (but with lovely wireless joypad). 1
LeMarchand Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 Oldest? PS3 is my newest console! Still have my original PS1, but the games seem to play on my PS3. Likely to get a PS4 soon, then the PS3 will go to the man cave which I'm hoping will be ready over summer. (Was going to be the PS1 in there).
Dos_Box Posted February 28, 2019 Author Posted February 28, 2019 I think I'll avoid the PS4 for the time being. Prices will plummet on those once the PS5 comes out, but the PS3 could be a good little project to jailbreak.
LeMarchand Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 I think I'll avoid the PS4 for the time being. Prices will plummet on those once the PS5 comes out I've been hanging on for that, but it could still be a way off. Plus the PS3 didn't drop that much, IIRC.
Dos_Box Posted February 28, 2019 Author Posted February 28, 2019 I've been hanging on for that, but it could still be a way off. Plus the PS3 didn't drop that much, IIRC. Well, a PS3 can be had for around £50 these days and I'm in no hurry to get s PS4, so by the time I may want one (several years away) they would be down to a similar level I would think. Interestingly, PS2's are only marginally cheaper at about £40-£50 for a working one with controller and a couple of games! Some are even asking for more than that (the cheeky scamps).
sted Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 that i use does a vita count if not its my ps4 pro. i have a ps3 but its not hooked up (tbh it spent the majority of its life as a bluray player until ps4 for me at least while ive owned every ps (bar psp) they have always ended up being secondary or tertiary consoles for the odd exclusive. ps4 is to some degree but the number of exclusives make it a more used machine (esp as i can use the vita to play it in bed lol)
bald_pig Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 Why not use something like emulationstation? just emulate ps1/ps2 instead of mame?
Dos_Box Posted February 28, 2019 Author Posted February 28, 2019 Why not use something like emulationstation? just emulate ps1/ps2 instead of mame? Because I want to play them on my TV, not on PC. There is something 'nice' about playing games on the original hardware as opposed to emulation.
Jawloms Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 My son (12yr old) uses a PS2 to play the PS1 version of Spyro.
Bumhug360 Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 Best bet if your internet connection can handle it is https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/explore/playstation-now/ps-now-on-pc/ get a cheap atom pc to plug in the back of your tv (around £80). Its £12.99 a month but its over 600 games including ps4 games. 30 day trial as well so can give it a go on your pc to see if it will work
bald_pig Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 Because I want to play them on my TV, not on PC. There is something 'nice' about playing games on the original hardware as opposed to emulation. You can run it on a HTPC or Raspberry pi. And sorry to be pedantic but wouldn't the PS3 just be emulating the PS2 or PS1 anyway?

Yes, but I have never owned a PlayStation and do like to play on the original device, that coupled with the fact that a lot of these compilations and games can be had for pennies means it will still be cheaper than going out and getting a dedicated micro-PC or Pi with controller and case etc.
3s-gtech Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 Backwards compatible PS3s are usually expensive, unreliable, and hard to find. The later slim models are better, but lose the functionality. You’re better off with a proper PS2 (again, the slim was usually more reliable). The PS2 will play PS1 games, but needs a PS1 memory card to be fitted. 1

While it may well be possible to get the software on a PS3 to the backwards compatible version - they also had extra slots for memory cards, which were simply not present on the other models. (They were under a flap next to the DVD slot). I only ever had one minor issue getting a PS1 game to play on my old PS2 and a quick restart sorted that so you may be better going down that route for the PS1/2 end of things. EDIT: Hold on - memory is a fickle thing. Those slots weren't for PS2/1 memory cards. But does show there may have been extra hardware involved. Edited March 8, 2019 by korifugi
LeMarchand Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 I'm pretty sure my PS3 Slim plays PS1, but not PS2, games. Which isn't a problem for me as I never had a PS2.
3s-gtech Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 I’m currently using my PS3 to play a PS1 game. Works beautifully - it’s emulated rather than native but some of the joypad options and virtual memory card settings are pretty cool. Working well. Means that my under-TV setup is PS2, PS3, PS4 and a Gamecube (because Mario Kart).
