Intranet/Extranet (Sharepoint)

Currently we have an intranet in our MAT but looking for a new solution. Want something which can be accessed internally and externally and thinking of looking at SharePoint. One of the big things we want to happen is a separate looking interface for primary students, secondary students and teachers but all using one url. Hoping to achieve this via security groups but cannot find anything online which gives me clear instructions but thinking sharepoint might do this.

 

Looking for any solutions as long as they are priced well (cheap!) and do what we need.

We do it ourselves. So we have a top level that gives an easy address to give out to staff and students. On this page elements and links are assigned per AD group so students don't see enticing links to try and follow. The staff and student also have their own subsites that internally are set as homepages.

I'm looking at developing something like that myself further down the line but more of an Intranet for IT stuff.

 

I know RM do something with our school that has 3x portals - there's a student and staff one, each one is accessed by a group on Office 365 that apparently the users are added into. Unfortunately as it's managed by them, I have no idea how it works. I just know what gets broken or doesn't work with it.
