Inappropriate Google home page background

We recently have allowed students to use Google Chrome, up to now we have only be using IE.

Problem we are having is that students are changing the Homepage background with inappropriate images.

Is there a way to stop the students selecting settings and doing this.

Can this be done in GPO?

We have added the group policy to the GPO, we are trying to figure out which option works!

Is the any particular to disable the 'Customize this page' option on the browser on Google chrome?

Do you mean they're setting the home page to something inappropriate? Might want to add the sites they're using to your web filter to stop them being accessible at all.

They are uploading images to customize the homepage background. Or just selecting the Chrome backgrounds.

No problem, its just a bit of a pain as we have had a few students just being idiots!

I had exactly the same problem. This is how I fixed it:

 

1. Import google ADMX templates from: https://dl.google.com/dl/edgedl/chrome/policy/policy_templates.zip

2. Go to Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Homepage

3. Enable "Configure the home page URL" - Mine is set to Google but set it to whatever you wish

4. Disable "Use new tab page as homepage" - This is the tab that allows a student to change themes/background images

5. Repeat the above steps for Google Chrome Default settings and in User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Homepage(Not sure if its needed but I have done it)

 

Additionally, I have also disabled:

 

- Dinosaur Easter Egg Game ( User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Allow dinosaur easter egg game )

- Block access to a list of URLs (User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Block access to a list urls --> Chrome://newtab )

- Incognito Mode (User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Incoginito mode availability

 

Might be a little overkill but it works well for me

You could also disable Chrome plugins and extensions:

 

Add --disable-extensions --disable-plugins to the end of the command in the target field in the shortcut:

 

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-extensions --disable-plugins

Btw, step 2 is not necessary if you copy the ADMX templates to your central store. Google's Chrome policies will automatically show up.

Just ran a report and all the changes have been enforced, but still not working...Very Strange!

Are you enabling the policy under your computers OU or Users OU? You will need to apply the policy under your pupil OU otherwise it will not work. I found this out the hard way. Does this make sense?

I just set my homepage as the new tab as well as the home page with gpo.

 

Only problem was people who didn't know you could just type in the address bar to search.

 

On the plus side, now they do, so they won't annoy me by opening a new tab and then closing the home page every time

It shouldn't need to be applied to the computer. The only Chrome based policy I have configured on the computer side is to disable Chrome's automatic updates. Everything else is controlled by the user policies.
