We seem to be suffering form an intermittent (though more times than not) Problem when trying to access Sims modules such as Exams and Attendance. When executed the splash screen will display and sit for about 1 min then an error box is displayed "Examsw, Timeout Expired" it will then revert back to the main Sims screen. Other times it will execute no problem, but it seems to be occurring more times than not now.

Any one any ideas?

we are having the same problems, i have noticed that it is possibly due to us using the scaled down version of sql server (free version) since have had sophos and WSUS installed on the same server. As these two use the sql engine for reporting sims.net users are at times getting timed out errors when trying to login to sims.net or when trying to run reports.

check the event viewer on the server for any logs relating the the sql. i think capita are going to send out letters advising sims.net schools to upgrade to microsoft sql server 2000

First question, just for elimination. You don't have bromcom do you? We had an issue with bromcom syncronisations causing database logins to expire, but it has since been patched.

I can't say I have seen any timeout errors on login since dumping msde some time ago (not personally anyway). The full sql in my experience will not make it any faster for day to day use, but it will hopefully stop issues like this when the governor is restricting the concurrent queries. It will also give you access to the profiler so you can monitor whats actually going on. You will discover that the sims database uses lots of stored procedures, some of which are extreemly slow. You will need cals too, unless you go for a per cpu licence.

go to the connect.ini on the mapped Sims drive and enter the commandtimeout=10000 and this should solve your issue :)

just remember it will take a little longer logging in first time you change this
