Mac - Accessing Windows Shared Drives

Hi All

 

Trying to get the Deputy Head's Mac to Access a couple of network shares (through Command+ K Connect to server then smb://IPAddress//NetworkShare, however, when mapping them, it seems to map them, but also includes another section which includes ALL the shared drives on that part of the network, is there an easy way around this aside from rejigging the network at all? (this is the first Mac in the school, he brought it with him from his previous employer....)

I assume you're referring to the server its shared from appearing in the side bar of the Finder app.

 

You can switch off 'Connected Servers' displaying in the side bar (going into Preferences in Finder> Side bar tab).

 

I would question if/why is this an issue?

 

As long as the security permissions are set correctly then he shouldn't be able to get to anything he should be able to get to.

It just looks very untidy to me in all honesty, As far as I can tell and am aware of security permission are correct as I was seeing what i could and couldn't access yesterday from it. Thanks!

Using Command K and the smb://sharenameorip/directory/usershare where "user share" specifies the directory the user should be accessing should solve your issue with all the shared drives showing for the user. In short, specify the full path to the share(s) they should have permission to access. Once that is working, click the + in the lower left corner to add that address to the users "preferred" shares. After the shared drives mount on the Desktop as icons you can drag the icon to the Dock or to the Finder Sidebar which precludes the user from having to use Command+K to access their shares.
