Rebuilding DCs Using Same Name and IP Address

I'm down to the last 2 servers to virtualise. These are the PDC and SDC (Server 2016) which I would like to do a clean install of them both and keep the same server names and IP address. I'm aware I could just use disk2vhd but I would rather do a clean install of them and possibly use Server 2019 as all the other servers are running 2019.

 

What would be the best way of doing this?

 

Also just to confirm the only thing I need to change on the DC VM settings is disable Time synchronization within Intergration Services?

You should not need to use same names if they are just Domain Controllers, I never have. I've kept original IP addresses for things like DHCP and DNS.

 

Everytime I do this I run DCDIAGs before each stage jus to make sure everything is happy.

Thanks I only want to use the same names as they will match the other server names, ****-SVR-DC01 etc

 

So demote DC02 then rebuild it as a VM, promote it as a PDC and move DHCP to DC02, once everything is replicated and running as it should be demote DC01 and rebuild as VM then promote it as a PDC and move DHCP back onto it?

You'll prob need to move FSMO roles. Would you plan to give new DC temp name or just completely take one DC out of service till all done?

I've always created new DCs everytime I have upgraded the OS.

 

I keep the IP range x.x.x-1-4 aside purely for DCs.

 

Let's say, for exampe, I have DC01 on 192.168.0.1 and DC02 on 192.168.0.2... I create 2 new servers. New name is DC-01 with IP address of 192.168.0.3 and the other new DC as DC-02 with the IP address of 192.168.0.4.

 

 

When a new OS is released again I reuse the old DC names (DC01 & DC02) and IP addresses (.1 and .2) on a cycle basis. It's easier that way for me.

Isn't it possible to rename DC's in Server 2016?

I could give it a temp name if needed as I have changed DC names in the past with no issue. Just not sure if changing it back to a name it used to be might cause issues?

That is a good solution, I wonder if I could then change the name and IP back to the originals after or even rename the currant DCs and then create the new ones with the correct names?
