GSuite Single MAT Tenancy

Morning,

 

I am trying to setup a single tenancy for a MAT, however the MAT domain is currently in use in another GSuite tenancy.

 

The domain is in regular use with at least 20-25 accounts being used on a daily basis, this was put in place because the MAT needed email setup but hadn't had a DFE number so the GSuite creation wasn't possible at the time.

 

Anyone got any ideas how I can go about doing this with minimal down time? I have contacted the GSuite Edu team but its all email based so its a little difficult getting my point across!

 

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

I have not needed them recently but they were always phone based for a school, has this changed?

Why not just continue to use the existing G Suite domain that the MAT has? I'm presuming it is already a verified G Suite for Education domain?

You see this would be the logical thing to do, however its had so many iffy settings put in place and lots of bodges, its so far from default settings and I wouldn't want the other schools added to the tenancy to inherit the same dodgy settings.

 

I know that sounds a little bit silly really!

They will likely make you close the old one and setup the new one - its a bit unfun if the accounts are in use as it puts takes 2-3 days whilst the domain is cleared during which time no gmail...

 

If you already have the new Gsuite Edu setup i would configure a mail relay on a vps to forward mail to the new edu accounts and point your mx records to that if you still wish to receive mail during the deletion process, then you can just chuck the address on your edu instance once the deletion goes through and change the addresses back to the main email address.

 

oh also, you can use google takeout to transfer the content from the old domain to the new domain!

Associate a new domain with the existing Gsuite tenancy - then make it the primary and remove the "wanted" domain.

 

Then register the new tenancy with the "wanted" domain...

 

Would that work? May cause some interruption to email services though...
