TMBS Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 Hi Our Maths department have requested the following: Please can we have webcams installed in all of the maths classrooms. the objective is to quickly display books onto the board so they will need a stand. In an ideal world these would be portable to go around the room. Can anyone recommend anything suitable that is not too expensive? Thanks Tracey

They include the HUE Intuition software which allows for things like screenshots, video capture and annotation. Surprisingly some classes still use them, although a lot of them fell by the wayside and ended up in cupboards. I don't even know how many we actually have left in school. In essence it's a USB camera but with the software it allows a little bit more. The "spine" of it is flexible which allows for different positioning and it's tall enough to stick over any book or paper you want to display. In terms of portability, it's as portable as the USB cable!

We got similar model, around £100, works plug and play straight away with the windows 10 camera app. There's additional software for more features but we don't use it (apart from one time when a camera had dodgy white balancing settings, and the propietry software was needed to fix it).

Still available, at around £40 each - not bad, the cameras are simply plug-and-play, you don't need to use their software. If there are already iPads / Android devices around, you can use screen mirroring (via Airplay or similar) to display whatever the camera is showing on the tablet, in which case AirServer on the teacher's computer is excellent.
MrLudwig Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 We have a couple of Ipevo’s and Lumens DC125’s. Both are pretty good, but I’d say the Lumens feel more sturdy. The Ipevo feels like it wouldn’t take much to break the arm. But this might just be we have one of the cheaper models. The Lumens were more expensive.

I didn't realise that Genee Vision had gone bust! That's what was in the maths rooms but they requested to be taken out two years ago...

Taking a photo and using Reflector or AirServer works for quite a few people, especially if you put that photo into a whiteboarding app like ShowMe. Thanks,

Garacesh Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 (edited) Bit of a bump, sorry! Looking for reviews about the software that comes with different brands. Looking for the ability to do the basic stuff like annotate/highlight etc. The head has just informed me that the way teachers are going to have to teach is changing.. Whatever that means. He wants to get some visualisers in and do some training on them.. Now then, originally when BSF was done every classroom had an AverVision visualiser on the desk but due to regular classroom reasons, I suspect many of them have been damaged, had their PSU's lost, etc. Science bought some IPEVO ones which seem cheap, cheerful and decent enough to do the job, but I notice they don't have a light on them which I can imagine might sometimes be a hindrance. Their software works.. in a fashion. It's a bit sluggish sometimes especially when changing settings, but it does the job. Boss has found and shown me the HUE ones which seem OK, the model he found has no light but one of their other models does, basing off price alone those'll probably be the ones we go for. Anyone have any experience with their HUE Intuition software? Is it any good? Worth the £250 site license? Or are there better alternative software suites? Edited March 21, 2019 by Garacesh

We've found that a better way of doing this is with the teachers having a tablet and Chromecast plugged into their projector. We then used an app called 'Explain Everything' which I'm sure was free, there is a web version too: https://explaineverything.com The teachers can then show/annotate any work and cast it to the board. Unlike a visualiser it's not stuck in one place and the teacher can move around the room and take photos of student work and present that on the screen too. It can be recorded too and shared to the class/absent students/colleagues, etc. I'm sick of dragging visualisers in and out of cupboards...

Another + for the Hue cameras - They work with the Windows 10 'Camera' App and require no additional drivers so students can use them on locked down machines too (depending on AppLocker) so no need to install any software 1
