Who will be giving Microsoft a loathsome scolding at Bett this year?

I wonder if it's possible to create an alternative QR code for them to scan, which would point them to a page of a list of gripes with Windows 10.

AJ, you're totally right of course, and I'm kind of settled with 1803 at the moment, but more than a handle of friends and family have been totally messed up because of 10 - most recently with one PC deciding to reboot in the middle of a Powerpoint presentation! I so wish MS could learn from the good practise all around the tech industry - just focusing on quality would be a game changer.

I'm thinking of bringing very heavy things to throw at their stand for Windows 10!

Am I the only person who actually quite likes Windows 10, and wouldn't go back to 7 if you paid me? :behindsofa:

Don't get me wrong, there are many things that aren't great, but there are workarounds for these. I guess every environment is different.

No, but Windows 10 has been a royal pain when it comes to management of the OS. Roaming profiles being one of the bug bears.

We're voting with our wallets and quickly becoming a Google shop (that has its own issues). Every Chromebook we purchase I get to recycle a Windows laptop. Soon I'll be able to put stake through the heart of our hosted Exchange too. Happy days...

I like it as well but. It is pitched as a 1:1 OS and at some point that will start to happen in education. Most of the issues are to do with devices being shared which means roaming profiles, fast 1st login etc.

I do think with so many edu orgs leaning to Google it could become an issue in terms of preparing students for the real world where G-Suite isn't used as wisely.

What problems do you have with roaming profiles - we use them here and don't really have any issues that we didn't have on 7.

After much trying I’m finally coming to realise 10 isn’t the way forward. 1:1 devices will ultimately become the norm and although 10 is designed more for that it’s still crap (updates, printers etc) so I can see more chrome book and apple devices in my future. Thanks MS I’ve had a great couple of decades supporting windows but you’ve cocked this one right up in my view by concentrating on the fluff that no one wants and not providing a rock solid os like MacOS has become.

I like it a lot. It takes a bit of a shift in mindset to manage but it works very nicely.

The danger is that education won't prepare students for the real world where Windows 10 1:1 will be the norm. RDS/VDI seem to be 2nd class citizens in terms of Microsoft 365 integration. I can see more on prem moving to the cloud. It feels like IT will be dishing out devices and managing them rather than a heavy administrative role on shared devices. Not ideal in primary/secondary.

It certainly does feel like we're rapidly moving towards a model where all devices are designed as 1:1 first and the concept of 'shared' device is very much an afterthought (if it's even considered at all)!

I guess that's the main reason so many of us are having problems deploying and supporting Windows 10 in a shared school environment as that's not really Microsoft's primary focus anymore.

Yep the roles seem to be knowledge worker and kiosks. Roaming Profiles, User Profile Disks, UEV exist but seem to be an after thought, depreciated in some cases. I think MS are still headed to a store based model which means 1:1 following the ipad model.

We stopped having issues when we removed most of the GPOs that controlled them, like Roaming Profiles etc. They now get dished out almost as the initial setup with some very basic policies and they work very well in that context.

That’s the thing, adding win 10 to a domain designed around win 7/8 isn’t going to work. You need to treat it like a completely new OS, read the documentation, find out what is/isn’t support and design gpo that fit.

With you on this. We've been running windows 10 for years - since 1511 and i must say we have had very little issues with it. Okay, 1511 may have been a wee bit early and a little buggy but it's even me a better understanding on how it's built but 1607 has been rock solid - i mean ROCK SOLID!! 1809 will be a little challenge but aren't all OS upgrades. We have tested 1809 as we run LTSB / LTSC and found a couple of apps will need to be paid to be upgraded as they simply refuse to work on 1809. The start menu looks like it might be a bit of a challenge but thats only at first glance.

Its just like going from XP > Win 7 > Win10.

I built gpos from scratch for 10 and gradually deployed. I did that same from 2000 to xp and xp to 7 so I’m happy I did things the best way. I wanted to like 10 as it was better than 8 and did appear to be better than 7 but core things still cause problems such as updates and printers.

I like to find out the new ways of doing things, but with 10 it seems there’s just no workaround for some things, such as printers. Just look at all,the threads with printer problems! I currently have printers deployed using 4 different methods and that’s only getting me a 90% success rate.

Fix the basics Microsoft and I might change my mind, otherwise I think 10 is a mess and judging by the various MS cockups over the last couple of years I think they’ve lost the plot.

Windows 10 was fine, but I don't use fancy stuff like roaming profiles. 1809 updated so easily it was on computers before I noticed.

It's worth complaining to the people on the stand though, they can report back that 48% of people hate windows 10 etc.

Preparing for the real world is mostly overblown. Just make sure they know what a spreadsheet, database, wp, browser etc is, how the internet works, programming, how to make a website etc. In the 5-10 years before they get a job everything specific will have changed again. (Which is why everyone should go to school 1 day a week for their wholes lives)

Don't change your mind! Your previous post re 1:1, IMHO, is spot on. And for those of you that worry about not enabling the current school generation with MS skills - two thoughts.

i) from what I've seen in school of the 20-30 year old generation, many of them have scarily poor IT skills regardless of platform.

ii) What I'm seeing in schools, and outside, the current school cohorts will adapt whatever route a school goes

Why do I hold these views? For i), it is a consequence of they staggeringly poor teaching of ICT in the school environment for that generation. For ii), the education is much better in this respect and the kids have grown up with a fearless exposure to technology and change.

Nor me. But should you be using UE-V with 10 instead ?

I havent fully rolled out so can't yet.
