Netwacky87 Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Hi all! Just wanted to canvas peoples' opinion on mattresses? I will explain... About 2-3 months ago I woke up to go to work and had to literally jump back on the bed as it felt like my back was going to break! Such agony! Couldn't move/walk/get up for about 5 days, I was bed bound. I had to crawl hands and knees to the loo and back whilst nearly crying with pain. Called 111 who said 'take ibuprofen' my reply was "OK, thats downstairs in a cupboard high up - How am I going to do this?" (I live alone and door was locked!) Day 6 of not moving - time for A&E walk in. Asked a friend to take me and doctor said I had pulled a muscle which holds the spine up straight! I was like Okkkk, recovery time? he said 4 months! ! So head off for private physio £38 quid a time and had about 8 sessions! All of which wasn't clearly up the root problem, it eased it but was still painful. All looked like it was getting better until a few days ago when I turned over in bed and felt something go 'pop' in my back. Here we go again...couldn't walk for 2 days. Back eventually eased off but was left with immense burning sensation down one leg, so much that I woke hourly and was almost in tears again with the pain. I associated it to Sciatica. I eventually thought i'll sleep in the spare room on a single bed...one night...It was like a miracle cure!! Everything has gone!! No Pain, No walking like i'd soiled myself, Nothing!!! Question is - Anyone got any recommendations for a new mattress? I don't want to spend a fortune as the place i'm in is a furnished rental so i'd probably have to leave it behind when I leave in circa 1 year. Its a very broad question but if anyone has an amazing mattress they can recommend. Ta Mart
Chris_Cook Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 I got one of these a couple of years ago (or something similar): https://www.silentnight.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/45/s/mattress-now-rolled-mattress-memory-3-zone/category/12/ Much better nights sleep after that, but then I didn't have the back pain so not sure how well it would do for that. However, just replacing an old mattress might help a lot. You will want to leave it to fully expand for a couple of days (they are vacuum packed), and there is a chemical/fume smell for a week or two. If you have the time, maybe go somewhere and try a few out.
elsiegee40 Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 We bought a memory foam mattress topper from John Lewis a couple of years ago and it transformed our mattress for me. I have a lengthy history of back problems and operations and I had needed a very firm mattress for a long time, but it started to feel like it was made of concrete.
MatthewL Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Have you tried turning the mattress over before you spend money?
Netwacky87 Posted December 27, 2018 Author Posted December 27, 2018 Have you tried turning the mattress over before you spend money? Yeah, its been turned upside down and back to front - I think its just had it tbh!
MatthewL Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 They don't last forever, go down the local bed shop and try a few out, that the best way I found when I was looking. I must admit the memory foam ones are nice but I tried a few others out and settled with the one I have.
elsiegee40 Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 I find the IKEA Hövåg mattress very comfortable too. We got one for daughter's bed and, now she has moved to Southampton, I have slept on it a few times when my back has been bad and I don't want to disturb Mr gee40. A standard double is £190. https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/mattresses/mattresses-toppers/hövåg-pocket-sprung-mattress-medium-firm-dark-grey-art-20258763/
webman Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 (edited) My partner and I got an Otty mattress a year ago and it's great. Out of all the hybrid memory foam ones we looked at, it was Eve or Otty and eventually the deciding factor simply came down to the price between the two. Internet-ordered ones usually get delivered in a box and 'inflate' once opened. They usually have a "sleep trial" of around 90-100 days, so if you don't get on with it in that time frame you can return it and try another from somewhere else. Good luck! That pain and situation sounds horrific to just happen to you and to deal with! Many sympathies to you. Edited December 27, 2018 by webman

I did see this and was going to get it until I read A LOT of bad reviews about odour! :/

Honestly, I am a pretty healthy guy, never had any sort of serious issues (never been to hospital before!) Its the worst pain in the world, so debilitating! makes you feel helpless, in fact you are! Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!
webman Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Yeah, I can only imagine My partner tore the soleus muscle in one of her legs last year just getting out of the car (!), which proably took around 4-6 months to fully heal in the end. At the time we lived in a top floor apartment with 3 flights of stairs to get to it - that was NOT a fun time with crutches...
powdarrmonkey Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 If the place is furnished and the mattress is dead shouldn't your landlord be replacing it?
Achandler Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 Mattresses are personal choice, it depends if you like a firm or soft one or one in between etc. Also surely you can keep your duff one and then put it back on the bed when you move out and have a nice new one for a while.
Netwacky87 Posted December 28, 2018 Author Posted December 28, 2018 Also surely you can keep your duff one and then put it back on the bed when you move out and have a nice new one for a while. Thats my intention. I don't plan on being here long term that works!
