Mid-Size/Ranger Speaker Recommendation?

Hi folks,

 

Any speaker gurus out there? We're after some replacement speakers for our Music rooms, but I'm struggling to find something suitable:

 

- Around 18" tall.

- Passive (there's a separate amp)

- Good quality sound (obviously!)

- £100-200 budget for a pair

 

I can find loads of bookshelf speakers (too small), floor standing speakers (too big), active speakers (we have an amp) etc. just nothing "normal".

We usually buy our Audio kit from KPMS as they always advise us well. These speakers are good although it depends on the output of your amp. It may be worth giving them a call, good thing too is that they arnt pushy sales people

Trying to spec on what you've given us isn't going to get the best product for you - also need to know room size, current amp power output, room capacity etc?

I've followed up with Astounded.com, who asked for amp details as well and have been very helpful.

 

I don't have room dimensions, but it's a fairly typical sized classroom for 30 students.

 

We've got two rooms that need speaker changes, amps are as follows:

 

Denon AN-100 (looks like it can drive 70W @ 4 Ohms)

Denon PMA-255UK (looks like it can drive 50W @ 4 Ohms)

Most speakers in this sector will be 8 ohm impedance so that's the figure to look at (though 6 ohms is becoming very common it seems). Some 4 ohm models exist, but it's more typically used in car audio. Won't matter too much really, but you'll want something fairly efficient in dB/W - that usually means larger cones and well tuned enclosures.

I'm going to try the pair recommended from Astounded, and if OK will buy another set for our second room (we're replacing in two classrooms).

Have a look at JBL Control 5's. 15" high, 175w at 4 ohm. We use the Control 1's with the Denon PMA255 quite happily, the 5's should be quite happy with that amp.

 

(When you said 18" high my first thought was EV ZX1's - 18" high perfectly but 200w at 8 ohm so a little more powerful and overkill for your system!)

For your budget and size constraints I would go for Wharefdale Titan 8 Passives.

Within budget, within size, bigger woofer than most others and more importantly they sound great. I've got JBL Controls and Titans and I'd choose the Titan's every time. Also running 6 of their big brothers the Titan 12 in my main Hall and regularly have compliments about the sound quality when we do performances/concerts etc.
