I would use the train more but the cost to certain places make it way more expensive than it does to drive and park. Hopefully for a year that I can have one for it will let me get out and about a bit more without the driving!

For oldies like me in the south, there is something called the network railcard that you can get at any age but is only valid for London and the South East.

 

It also allows friends to travel with a 3rd off, so the savings add up quickly.

Yes, I have had one for years. I just renewed with a digital one which is installed on both my phone and Mr gee40's phone just in case (it's onky valid if I am travelling tough)

 

With the network railcard you can get ticket discounts for up to 3 other adults AND 4 children travelling with you. It can only be used after 10am on weekdays (any time at weekends) on tickets costing £13 or more

 

The 16-25 and 26-30 railcards can be used on peak services and nationally. The new railcard is very well timed. My daughter turns 26 next year :)

Only any use for leisure activity's. Doesn't provide any benefit for commuters.

 

True for Network Railcard. 16-25 and 26-30 railcards can be used on any ticket costing £13 or more at peak times

One of the people here realised they don't check your validity and changes the digits on here driving license number to keep getting one... she is 30 now.

 

Absolutely disgusting if you ask me

I find group saves are always cheaper than the rail cards prices!

 

Mind you that is only for a short journey, I dont go on the train unless its for a pub crawl in a place and always with friends.

There's usually only me and Mr gee40. Not enough people for groupsave :D

Has anyone used the cheap annual gold card trick? :)

 

So there's a sneaky trick you can do to save money on rail fares ... and that's to buy a Gold Card (annual season ticket) for a journey that you never make!

 

I caught up with Alex who lives nowhere near Lichfield in Staffordshire, and yet he has an Annual Gold Card between the two stations there as it's one of the cheapest that you can buy, and saves him 1/3 off other fares on the network - including Oyster fares in London!

I’m currently exploiting the loophole that means I keep my 16-25 railcard until about 3 days after my 27th birthday...

 

But I will then definitely move to this new card!

The gold card would be useful for people who aren't eligible for any of the other railcards, want discounts on first class or TfL tickets, travel after 9.30 am. Mon-Fri but before 10 a.m. and/or want to travel to stations outside of the area covered by the Network Railcard mentioned by @supportman. The gold card area is slightly larger if you compare the two maps...

 

To get the card to pay for itself you would have to buy at least thirteen off-peak return tickets from Oxford to Birmingham New Street @ £38.50 each (for example). The total cost would be £333.67 rather than £500.50.

 

I guess you could always do what @Simcfc73 mentioned and lie about your age to get one of the other railcards for £30 though? :(

 

What we really need is a 31 to 59 railcard! :)

I live in the south east and use the Network Railcard. My forays further afield by train are rare :D

I don't see how you can lie about your age now especially digitally I had to enter my passport number for the 16-25 railcard to verify my eligibility and age for it.

 

Believe me I tried..
