Hi

 

We are coming to the end of our 3 year Sharp MFD contract. Although very happy with these devices we have to get quotes for the new contract. One of the companies I have seen is Riso who apparently provide ink jet devices as an alternative to laser devices with faster page print speeds and much lower cost per page.

 

I confess that I didn't realise such devices existed so would like to know if anyone has any experience of this type of device? Better or worse than laser MFDs?

 

We also use Papercut and I'd like to know if this works well with Riso machines?

Depends what quality output your requirements are. I saw inkjets for more quality, graphic design output where lasers offer good enough quality for general office/school related printouts. Generally I too was unaware that inkjets could be more cost effective and struggle to believe it personally but happy to be corrected. We have just begun a new contract with sharp laser mfd so really happy to see your positive feedback.

I think Riso is a bit an underdog in the UK, but they are very big in the Asian Market, just not an MFD we see so frequently in the UK.

Regarding switching from Laser to Inkjet it really depends on what you are using the Devices for. One good thing about Laser Printers are that you can use highlight markers on them and the Print doesn't smudge, whereas with Inkjet you get yourself in a mess.

Regarding cost per page the Lasers usually win, but interesting to hear that they offer a lower cost per page.

 

As for PaperCut, they work with all major Vendors, and are compatible with Riso, you can even get embedded licenses if you opt for one of their bigger MFD Models:

We have decided to go with Riso (starting next March) as we have had decent feedback from local schools already using them. Riso have a built in print release system (though it's not 'follow-me') so we will drop Papercut for now and see how we get on. - we only have 3 devices in a fairly small school so it shouldn't be too much of a loss.

Happy to share my experiences after March when we start using them!

we have recently replaced our repro machine from Konica to Riso but found a bug through papercut. on the Samsung's we have you can login to papercut and select accounts the user is a member of even if usernames have spaces in. however the Riso will not work with spaces in usernames.. all other systems we have work fine with that naming convention so has gone back to the manufacturers to fix. took ages to work out as could login but didn't show any accounts

I know Papercut works on the Riso devices, but they already have a built in print release system, though it doesn't do 'follow-me'. As we are a small school we will use the Riso system to avoid the expense of Papercut, and see how we get on without the 'follow-me' functionality. I think most of our users tend to collect print from their nearest machine anyway.

Not sure if you have signed on the dotted line but check the device you are getting gets updated drivers. We have found a device we got, that is only 3 years old, no longer gets updated drivers so we can not deploy them. Riso UK know there is an issue, they are chasing Japan for a solution but don't expect one. So we effectively have an expensive paperweight. Also make sure you get the builtin release system, not the additional reader. We have no end of problems with the release device, it doesn't have the full range of characters to enter passwords and the process is a pain and has to be followed precisely.
