Athlon 200GE - AMD's new budget processor

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this yet seeing as it has been getting reviewed quite heavily online atm.

Given that it is far cheaper (£49.99 - $55 US) and giving a lot of Intel's lower end CPU's a run for their money I won't be surprised to see this featuring in a lot of entry level classroom desktops soon.

Hadn't seen this, it certainly packs a good punch. Passmark reports put it just above things like the Pentium G4560 and way above the G4520, both nearly double the price. 3 times less than an i3 7100. Slots right into AM4 motherboards, low TDP, quiet/silent cooling. Could indeed be a win.

I think if refurbished PC's were not such a great steal, where you can pick up complete i5 machines complete with SSD's and 8gb of ram for between £200-£300, we'd look at this a lot closer.

If you need more cores, AMD also make a Ryzen 3 2200GE (£104.27) and Ryzen 5 2400GE (£163.82). Both of which can be passively cooled like the 200GE.

Have you also seen AMDs new V1202B and V1605B Ryzen SoCs? These support quad DisplayPort (each capable of 4K output) and dual Gigabit Ethernet!

£50 cpu with weedy Vega3 graphics (still beats intel) a cheapo A350 board for also £50 but then £74 for 8GB RAM really makes modern PCs a bad deal... The real shame is that the faster and better the RAM (esp. dual channel) can really lift the Vega Graphics. This could be a 720p champ with the right RAM. Still surprised that SSDs are cheap again.480gb for £65! nice.

I suspect that it will also make decent office machines as well, with the low power draw being a big selling point for them.

I wouldn't mind having a play with one TBH.

As regards gaming, I saw this last night and you can just scrape by with 720p and low settings:

I'd certainly not pass over these if buying new, I have a small but perfectly serviceable number of AMD machines across the school and I'd happily add to that.

for pure bang for the buck, AMD have the crown again. Can't wait until Dell and HP release sensible AMD processored offerings on the business lines. Good core count, great multi-thread performance, and considerably cheaper. With the introduction of the processors with Vega graphics too (hopefully more to come) then you have real competition in the market. And with AMD having seemingly moving towards 7nm processes, the tipping point may soon be here?

 

In a personal side of things, I'm glad I no longer have to pay the intel tax, and even better, these processors are going to be great for sleeper projects without having to risk damaging the old case too much ensuring there is enough airflow
