wireless access points

We currently have 2 access points in school situated in 2 rooms about 20 metres apart, I logged into them the other day because the signal from one is not brill and found that they are both set to channel 6, as they are so close to each other should they be on different channels or even on auto?

 

I've also got a third access point to go in a different class each time with the laptop trolley, so what channel should I set that at? Thanks

Yes you should definitely set them to different channels, otherwise the stronger of the two (as you're experiencing) will receive all traffic leaving the other AP doing very little.

Ended up that the signal was too good, and we needed to adjust the sensitivity of the laptops so they were not so picky about joining a network.

 

Works well now.

I'll change the channels next week and set them to 1, 6 and 11. Will this still be OK if the access points are physically quite close ie next room?

We had the exact same problem in our English office. I didn’t think it was possible.

Just logged in to one of them to change channel and error appeared - choose channels between 3 and 9 for 40mhz setting! Its a buffalo access point by the way. if I change it to 20mhz will I notice any difference? Edited April 28, 2008 by chrbb

Flash your AP with the current UK firmware. You have US firmware installed.

Hi Richmond we had the same trouble here. Turns out we managed to fix it by changing the access points signal strength down to about 50% Some of them were on different channels but still overlapping.

Well I changed mine from 40mhz to 20mhz and allocated channels 1 and 6. On the basis that we still have wireless I'm hoping that will fix it:)

In the configuration pages of some APs usually under the wireless radio configuration type tabs where you change the channel (or an advanced tab just off to the side of that) it will give you the option to adjust the output power of the access point.

 

Again depending on the AP you could have a dropdown box with various power settings like 25%, 50%, 75% etc.

Make sure your access points have AT LEAST 2 channels difference between them.

They are now at 1 and 6, and the new one will be set at 11, I know I'm being dim but that's ok isn't it?
