Slightly o/t but has anyone else noticed that links such as the one above jump around the page when you try to click on them. I frequently right click and go to open the link in a new tab when using Firefox and the link appears to dodge the mouse!

Works well however it doesnt work on school laptops as it doesnt support proxys!

I found teh same as Jonk - we can't use it here as we go through two proxies before reaching the Net.

Have got staff laptops using Windows Defender which are getting updates from the WSUS server.

 

All seems ok.

Yeah, I just turned it on and gave it a go. Seems to work fine.

It's inaccurate to say that signature updates don't work through a proxy - they will. Windows Defender uses AU - so if your AU works, it'll work. If your AU proxy settings (set them in IE) are wrong, then you're probably not getting your security updates, and that's a bigger problem.

 

but I don't understand what he means by AU, ("All Users" ???)

 

But maybe one of you experts can work it out for us

 

Just for info, I installed it on a teachers home machine (MS Antispysware had gone walkabout) and did a scan - it found a few things (180solutions etc) and seemed to be locked up when trying to remove the baddies but it just took a long time (15-20 mins).

 

Nothing re-appeared when I rebooted so I was quite impressed.

AU = Automatic Updates. If automatic updates are turned on, Windows will download updated definitions through the AU client.

In a suitable GPO as a startup script:

 

Script to run:

 

proxycfg

 

Command line arguements:

 

-d -p proxy.yousite.ac.uk yourwsusserver

 

You need XP SP2 to make this work. If you don't want XP SP2 or have 2k machines, copy proxycfg.exe from w2k3 server or a XP SP2 machine.
