tosca925 Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Windows Defender (Beta 2) is a free program that helps you stay productive by protecting your computer against pop-ups, slow performance and security threats caused by spyware and other potentially unwanted software. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en
Rozzer Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Nice one just tested looks pretty good. Ross
Geoff Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Hmm, bit too close to extortion for my thoughts. Yes, here's our OS. We wont fix all the security/design flaws but we will sell you this instead that'll fix everything right up. Honest.
_Bob_ Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Slightly o/t but has anyone else noticed that links such as the one above jump around the page when you try to click on them. I frequently right click and go to open the link in a new tab when using Firefox and the link appears to dodge the mouse!
Geoff Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Firefox is still loading the page. Increase your rendering delay.
jonk Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Works well however it doesnt work on school laptops as it doesnt support proxys!
RobC Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 I found teh same as Jonk - we can't use it here as we go through two proxies before reaching the Net.
Dos_Box Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 Even one proxy set in IE throws it off. Nice planning Microsoft.
Geoff Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 WSUS seems to support updating Windows Defender. Has anyone got it to work?
Guest Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 WSUS seems to support updating Windows Defender. Has anyone got it to work? Have got staff laptops using Windows Defender which are getting updates from the WSUS server. All seems ok.
Geoff Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 Yeah, I just turned it on and gave it a go. Seems to work fine.
SimpleSi Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 I found this from a microsoft guy on another forum It's inaccurate to say that signature updates don't work through a proxy - they will. Windows Defender uses AU - so if your AU works, it'll work. If your AU proxy settings (set them in IE) are wrong, then you're probably not getting your security updates, and that's a bigger problem. but I don't understand what he means by AU, ("All Users" ???) But maybe one of you experts can work it out for us Just for info, I installed it on a teachers home machine (MS Antispysware had gone walkabout) and did a scan - it found a few things (180solutions etc) and seemed to be locked up when trying to remove the baddies but it just took a long time (15-20 mins). Nothing re-appeared when I rebooted so I was quite impressed. regards Simon
Norphy Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 AU = Automatic Updates. If automatic updates are turned on, Windows will download updated definitions through the AU client.
Geoff Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 In a suitable GPO as a startup script: Script to run: proxycfg Command line arguements: -d -p proxy.yousite.ac.uk yourwsusserver You need XP SP2 to make this work. If you don't want XP SP2 or have 2k machines, copy proxycfg.exe from w2k3 server or a XP SP2 machine.
