condensing my tower to a tiny pc.

Hi All

 

Just had a question on my personal home PC setup.

 

I have a rather large custom built PC using an Antec case and space is becoming a bit of a premium in my house with the recent purchase of a large monitor.

 

Rather than sell it I would like to use it but need to condense it down to a smaller case ideally Intel Nuc size.

 

I am aware that a lot of the components I wouldnt be able to move to such a tiny case but I would like to reuse my Intel Core i3 4160 3.60GHz Socket 1150 processor as well as the memory and SSD drive I have already purchased.

 

Is there a way I could do this? Does anyone have any suggestions on cases I could look at?

 

Any help would be most appreciated.

I'd be looking at a mini ITX motherboard and case.

Downsizing the case is possible, but depends if you have a dedicate GPU and the size of your current Motherboard. You could get a MicroATX case if your using onboard graphics.

 

Obviously if you need to replace the motherboard, your likely going to need a new copy of Windows as well, in which case a mini ITX would be a good shout for a small form factor

That's going to be a case of trawling Ebay and some off-track websites due to the age of your kit. You won't get near a NUC size - Mini ITX is still 17cm x 17cm, plus you'll need to fit a PSU and probably a graphics card in there. Best bet to me would be to build new, so that you can spec a decent APU therefore saving on power, heat and discrete card requirement.

You won't find a NUC that you can use your existing kit on as generally they are soldered on CPU. You could get a MATX motherboard for your existing CPU and RAM but they don't tend to be cheap.

 

TBH I would sell your rig as a whole rig, and then buy a new small MATX/MITX/NUC with a suitable MOBO/CPU/RAM.

many thanks all. I agree with most of you. Sell existing one and just get myself a new one would be the safest bet.

If going for small, powerful and running Windows, then it may be worth looking at a Chinese console.

Seriously, AMD had quietly been developing a Ryzen/Vega based chipset for the Chinese market and it has now started to make it into dedicated gaming PC's (running Windows 10).

 

 

Not sure if they have started to export them yet, but I would really like one!
