Wireless Laptops and MSI's

Does anyone else have issues with software which is installed by Group Policy, onto laptops using a wireless connection.

 

Some software installs fine but others don't and will only install when a network cable is used.

 

Any Ideas

i think you will always have issues with GPO deployed software over wireless.

 

there is just not enough bandwidth.

 

if anyone knows how to make it work please tell me!

they are sitting right under the access point.

 

generally you will need to periodically wire them in to get the software there.

It really depends how big the MSI is and how reliable the wireless connection is. For example, if you deployed Adobe Reader (which is about 20MB) this should be fine, but if you tried to deploy MS Office it would take forever over wireless!

Dont hold me to this but i believe there is a gpo setting in computer config - admin template - system - logon, called wait for network connection or something, this i think forces windows to wait until it is fully connected with update gpo settings before displaying the logon screen.

you may find that some wireless nertwork connections dont actually connect to the network until windows is loaded, i had this on a dell laptop the other day. didnt get chance to find a fix, just used a cable in the end.

The laptops are useing the Intel Pro Set - with Pre logon connect and the software is in the 20meg size.

 

What do people think of the Windows wireless cleint?

Try disable "slow link detection" in Computer Config, Admin Templates, System, User Profiles

I promise never to say anything bad about my network of unmanaged dlink APs! We have ALMOST no problem with wireless on them!

We don't have wait for network on either - the only difference is it takes an extra restart to pick up the software. On the next restart, it will wait for the network anyway.

Yes, I wouldn't try to install Office over the wireless connection on 15 laptops at once - but I've certainly done it on, 10. Yes, it takes ages, but I'm drinking tea!

If your not using this policy i would try it. Once you have set it force group policy to update.

I forgot to say:

I know you probably have already, but it is worth checking that you've got up to date drivers. Some of the intel ones are really rubbish - in fact on one model I've given up with the internal card because it keeps dropping connections and use PCMCIA cards instead.
