Microsoft releases Office 2019 for Windows and Mac

I looked at doing something similar when our VL renewal was up but the cost just wasn't worth it and the licensing guys between our resellers and Microsoft didn't seem to know about all this new stuff - there was a lot of toing and froing with MS on their own product.

 

I'll probably revisit it - Microsoft365 seems to be the way to go for servers/client OS and Office etc.

I thought the O365 A1 licenses were free? Or am I wrong in thinking that?

Office 365 A1 Plus for faculty / Students should be free to add to your tenancy as it was part of the self signup options, but I know that several people have had great fun with getting MS to assign the licence to them as their domain has not been flagged as a valid educational establishment or some such reason.

 

Of course you should still ensure you have a MS agreement in place that covers you for Office (such as EES-OVS) but it then means you can deploy the C2R version instead of the MSI one

I'm having issues with my KMS. I called Microsoft yesterday and requested the KMS key, and they added it in immediately. Great. However when I add it into my VAMT instance, I'm getting the error:

"The specified product key is invalid, or is unsupported by this version of VAMT. An update to support additional products may be available online."

 

I've contacted Microsoft again and they said that is the correct key. I am using VAMT 3.1 and ADK 1803 on the server. I'm at a loss at the moment.

This download is needed for administrators to set up activation for volume license editions of Office 2019, Project 2019, or Visio 2019 by using either the Key Management Service (KMS) or Active Directory.

2019 seems disappointingly similar to 2016. I haven't found anything different yet. Apart from the crazy installer.

Well, it's certainly not as easy to install as the MSI. Ironic that they call it click to run, when for enterprise it's hardly click to run! You have to download the ODT and then write an XML file to download the files, then you need to edit the XML again and point it to the downloaded files and then run the ODT again to install the application.

 

All I want to do is install it on my test PC!

their idea like it or not is azure ad/intune where assuming its the same as office 2016 auto deploy its a piece of cake to deploy it to any and all pcs you want it on. ms dont want you having anything on prem but a router as that way you have to pay yearly for a service rather than buying windows 10/office 2016 and using it till the pc dies

Thanks for that. I've added the key in as an AD Activation and my copy of Office 2019 has now activated. That's despite the entry in VAMT Active Directory-Based Activation for Office 19 stating "The KMS host key (CSVLK) used to create this AD activation object does not support any products that are capable of AD activation.". Strange.

What a stupid setup process

 

Managed to get the files downloaded via odt, my xml file for installation looks ok yet when I try and install after a few seconds just goes back to the command prompt without any indication of whats wrong. I can understand a bit of faff needed to get the beta to run but in a full release the install should be a bit more polished than manually creating xml files and running an installer from the command prompt

 

It will be something stupid, it always is just some indication like "invalid product key" "path not found" "line 7 contains an illegal operation cease operation you have 10 seconds to comply" would be nice

I've just emailed for the KMS keys to be added.

 

I've also emailed a different address I got from another thread about the Office 365 licenses, it looks like others have had a bit a wait to get these sorted.

After a bit more fiddling I started to get an error message about lack of disk space or no internet connection, google revealed that the error code is just a general "there is some sort of problem" message that could mean anything. I then moved everything to a new folder on root of C and tried again and it worked

I would guess their logic is if they can get those who want 2019 using SCCM to deploy it, it's only a few steps away from moving them over to the 365 version.

I'd bite the bullet and go for the Office 365 ProPlus version if your using Office 365. Been on it for a year and not really had any issues apart from legacy features.

According to the deployment guide, you are supposed to be able to select Office Professional Plus 2019 in the Office 365 Client Installation wizard.

I tried but during install is says cannot install on the channel specified (I don't have Office 365 subscription) when deployed to a workstation and errors.

 

Tried deploying volume license version i successfully installed on my PC with a custom xml but this is the error i get
