If you want XYZ... "you Chromebook". Er.... not entirely sure that's grammatically correct.

It's like how Apple obsessively says "on iPhone you can foo" rather than "on an iPhone you can foo". Is there something I'm missing?

No... but Google will certainly be missing my money if all they can do is belittle the long established players in the OS market... if Windows and MacOS were really that bad, I would be running a nicer version of Linux than Chrome OS.

I guess belittling the competition is easier than thinking of reasons for consumers to buy the product?

Perhaps someone at Google also watched Samsung's recent Galaxy ad and thought it was a great idea?

Me too. The number of errors/popups/BSODs shown in Google's ad is vastly exaggerated.

The average consumer just wants to know whats better, not the specs or software. They just want something that works and if an advert tells them this then they will believe somewhat of it.

Its true that its exaggerated but then which average user hasn't exaggerated their laptop being broken when it was just something small? They have played into this one.

Google will still get my money as they are who I prefer out of all the tech brands although I wont be buying a Chromebook anytime soon until I can actually install programs to the actual HDD and not Chrome.

We had a couple of staff with Chromebooks last year, but they weren't overly successful. If staff have a portable device, they need to use an RDP client but the ones available didn't work. A couple of weeks ago a teacher bought in her new Chromebook and remote desktop works fine. I think we'll be seeing a few more. I home SMT buy me one if I have to support the damn things. Mind you, I didn't get an iPad and I expected to support those, so I don't hold out much hope.

Wife turned on her windows laptop last night for the first time this year, as she tends to do everything on her iPad, but needed to create a bootable USB key. I kid you not it took an hour just to run through updates. Her fault though for letting it gather dust. Guess it would be the same whether it be Windows, Chrome/Android or iOS/OSX or whatever though if it's not been used in a while. The Google ad did make me chortle though. My buddy Tim tested a chromebook for one of his magazines; https://bigtechquestion.com/2018/05/25/hardware/should-i-buy-a-chromebook/ pretty useful review.

I have a Windows 7 box that has never been connected to the internet and so never updated since I installed it 5 years ago. It's only used for converting VHS tapes via a USB thingy. Doesn't need any updates. I don't think it has been activated either. Runs just fine. I had a similar XP box before that.

A Chromebook would boot in its normal time (a few seconds), download the latest version of the OS with all updates in the background and completely install it to a different partition. Next time you restart it'd just boot into the new version of the OS. Transparent to the user.
