Shift from Internet Explorer to Chrome Browser For Enterprise

Has anyone made the shift from internet explorer to Chrome Browser for Enterprise as their default staff and student internet browser?

 

been looking at this and really want to change as I hate IE :

Yes.

 

not really any cons but some websites dont work that well in Chrome and they do in IE so Staff are aware.

 

Lots of pros and as we are moving to Gsuite etc there will be a lot more.

 

Sorry couldn't be of much more specific help as I cant really think of any at the moment as we have been Chrome for so long.

Literally a handful of websites that we need IE for - mainly for ActiveX. We deploy chrome and set as default for students with a associations XML. Staff are free to choose defaults.

Chrome has been the default browser at my school for so long I can't remember when it was set as the default.

 

It must be over five or six years now.

 

If so any pro or cons about the changeover?

I can't think of any cons these days.

We did this so long ago I can hardly remember ! I certainly don't recall any major issues, other than getting the staff to login to the browser.

Speaking to other technicians we think it was in 2010 we made the switch.

Only reason we ever used IE was because we had a sharepoint 2010 intranet with SIMS integration setup by a company called CoreECS (now liquidated) and chrome didn't play nicely with AD and SSO at the time

 

We ditched Sims Learning Gateway and now use Sharepoint on Office365 for our intranet and SSO works seamlessly via both IE and Chrome - so time to change

 

We do have both Office365 and Gsuite platforms setup with AD synchronizations for the school

We did this at all our schools and setup the Windows Group Policies years ago.

Have been running Chrome alongside IE on Win7 for years now, and with the shift to Win10 I'm making Chrome the default (because lol @ Edge). The GPOs are detailed and thorough, you can force-deploy extensions and blacklist everything else, block sign in if you want, roam settings via a small profile.pb file... it's more secure than IE, more configurable than the new Firefox Enterprise and better supported than Edge. It's the obvious choice now, IMHO.

At my last school I made chrome the default (I found it much easier to manage) and cited its sandbox security as the main reason.

Here we make both IE and chrome available, and let staff use whichever one they prefer (with a couple of sites forced to a specific browser as they don't open right in the other).

 

The one thing we've found (historically) is that getting chrome profiles to work reliably is a bit an art form. We find we keep having to reset them. We're testing the newer(ish) chrome roaming profiles, which we hope will help with this.

I deploy both as others have said there are still sites that won't display or work properly in both browsers. However Chrome is set to default as its the better browser of the 2

For those running Chrome as default how does it handle SIMS Reports? Our staff use some SIMS reports that open in IE and then have the option to export to Excel. How does this work with Chrome?

The SIMS reports are output as an HTML file and Chrome has no issues displaying these not sure about the exporting to Excel though!

Exactly this, but I'm not as nice as Oaktech so staff are defaulted as well apart from Finance who are special...
