Bitlocker Removable Drives GP- Win10 + OLDER OS

Hi Everyone

 

Not sure if this is the correct forum but just wondering if anyone can help.

 

The New GDPR has been put in place this year and we are all trying to make sure data is secure on and offsite from schools. One of the ideas is to encrypted USB drives with bitlocker but correct me if i am wrong. With Windows 10 i assume that different version of 10 don't actually work with bitlocker as its not compatible? We have a mixture of windows 7 and 10 so my question is

 

What policy do i need to setup on the machines GP to make sure that removable drives for bitlocker works on old versions of windows OS.

 

Has anyone dealt with this and has it been tested

Win10 (Something like 15XX+) has a different version of encryption available, but if you use the older one it's compatible with all OSs etc, so as long as you set that in your GPO it'll work backwards too

Would be so much easier if schools can afford RDP from home as it wouldn't as much hassle

Another thing to consider is that Bitlocker is Microsoft proprietary, I'm not sure you can access a Bitlockered USB on Linux, Chrome OS or Mac OS. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You need third party software on a mac.

You can mount bitlocker volumes on Linux / Mac OSX with the dislocker package, This works with either the recovery key or the bitlocker volume password - https://github.com/Aorimn/dislocker
