[sims] Academic year start date - third party looking into next year

We are trying to find a solution to not being able to see classes for next year in classcharts and SMHW until the first day of the new academic year.

 

Classcharts have said that there is no way to see new classes until the start date.

 

What would the implications be if we were to make the start date of the new academic year a date in August and code days as holiday/inset? Would this effect the census or contracts/days worked etc??

 

Has anyone got any experience of this issue?

I wouldn't advise changing your academic year to be honest. Its been brought up here before.

How do these systems extract data from SIMS? At my school, I wrote an online homework system and the way I extract the data is to use commandreporter to run a report. In order to pull the timetable early, I change the effective date on the report so it uses the timetable from say, mid-September. I do however have to tell it to 'think' that today is that same date or the start and end dates for the start of course will be wrong. Might be worth investigating for SMHW?

If you do change the academic year start date, you may want to read KB-479101 - After changing the start date of the next Academic Year, the Pastoral Structure still shows the original chosen date

How would changing it to August help you? Are your teachers planning on doing all the seating plans during their holidays?

It would be made available should they wish to. It is not a best case scenario solution and in no way fixes anything.

 

I would prefer the TPs to provide a function that can be a date effective range like can be done in SIMS, so staff can use this now before the holidays.

Take it from someone who had to deal with a system that had been changed to start the academic year in july!

 

DONT DO IT!

 

the oddities and fallout all over the system was a pain...

 

I moved it back to September the first chance I got!
