A resize/copy/move partitioning proggy available for 2003?

but does anyone know of a program like Volume Manager by Powerquest [now, Symantec] that will do the same job on Server 2003.

 

I used to worship that program back on the NT server but now, I'm really after a program that will achive the same thing on Server 2003.

 

Any ideas asap would be most welcome.

They do still sell it but its the same ver [AFAIK] as I have.

 

Neither Partition Magic or Volume Manager works on it when I tried them

 

Any ideas what I can do?

You tried Acronis Partition Expert 2003? It says no Server 2003 support but i'm pretty sure i've used it on a server.

hmmmmm nope - not tried it but sounds good.

 

I'm gonna give Symantec a quick call first to see if they have a solution to it, otherwise, I might have a look at that (or manually copy and recreate 300+ shares *cries*)

Will do it apparently. I need to resize a hardware raid5 array and will be trying this but you can try it first

 

Knoppix also has partition resizing tools on it.

I was expecting that there would be some Open source stuff out there, but I'd rather buy a bit o' software and shout at someone if it messes up lol

 

Got hold of Symantec and they informed me that at this time, they dont have a product that can do this on Server 2003 [and that they have had a lot of people ask, but dont know of a time frame when something will be ready]... just so you all know

 

You got a price on the Acronis one indie?

Be very wary of using Linux re-partitioning tools on Windows machines, especially on NTFS partitions - if it works, its great - if it doesn't work then you can end up really really stuffed

I've had good experience with knoppix for re-sizing NTFS.

My advise is to perform a full windows defrag before you begin.

Yep. Should be ok if you defrag beforehand. Just do a scandisk in windows afterwards to be sure.

Just because someone writes a program and it works for them and some others doesn't mean it will work for you :?

 

I mean - I hear Windows works for a lot of people - The ones that use notepad for wordprocessing on a standalone machine and print to an HP500 inkjet

I think I'll go for the Acronis kit... if they dont mind shelling out £280 hehe

 

Its gonna save me literally hours and hours of time - tho if I dont get it 300+ users isnt much to copy / paste and recreate the shares I guess .....hmmmmm....

 

Wonder if the trial ver will be ok? hehe

If its just user data robocopy if off to somewhere else if you have the room and then do what you want with the disks.
