Yes, but... Don't try to set it up yourself unless you want an aneurysm. You also need to buy projectors designed with this level of $ophistication in mind.

 

its not always a pain, using somethng such as max msp you can set up multi projector systems with ease. we have a room with 4 projectors, 3 on one wall projecting a super wide image and then one on the floor that acts as an interactive display. all of that running from one computer too.

Think we're just getting LED PAR cans, if we do get moving lights they won't be moving whilst we are projecting and the movement feature will mostly be used as a way to change where they point without getting the ladder and stick out.

 

I was thinking of a similar setup - we're aiming for a setup where users can come along and use a simple interface to turn the lights on and set them up how they want without having to clamber around on ladders and so forth. Are all-motorised lights practical in terms of cost and usability these days?

Hi David - moving head lights are as expensive as you want them to be - but controlling them is still a pain. If all you want is a colour changing wash light then I've used (and owned) Stagg Headbangers and they're great for the price (approx £120 each) but are very budget. You might be able to store a few presets on a simple desk and say to trained teachers "raise that fader, this will happen" but then they start to want more and more, then they turn it into a disco!

 

Fixed focus LED Pars are best for untrained user use - stick them in 3 channel mode and give them a basic desk. Most people understand "Raise that, it goes red. Raise the next one, it adds Green. Raise the next one, it adds Blue. Mix to get what you want." How I had my Drama studios configured and never really had any issues!

We had to get a new Lighting desk to use LED and movers, and decent movers are around £2500 each minimum for good features (Martin Rush we bought here).

 

The cheaper LED's don't do decent colours and to get the same brightness as conventional lights you need good stuff.

Going a lot OT - sorry....

 

I'd argue against that, it depends on the conventional! A 300w PAR56 isn't going to stand up to even a cheap LED, especially once you've put a red or deep blue gel in it (can you even see a 300w PAR56 with L181 in it?)

 

Decent colours - depends. Get RGBW and your palette becomes a lot more useable, and open white is a lot nicer. (Take the RGB out and just use the White chip.)

 

Different horses for different courses me thinks!

It isn't just the purchase cost; these things need maintaining.

If the projector is going on a lighting boom, I'd probably look to see if I could stretch to a lamp and maintenance free laser unit. They are not the cheapest, but well worth the saving in hassle struggling to change lamps etc at height. Not sure that you would get one at your £1,000 budget though, so you may need to do a bit of begging for a little bit more wiggle room in your budget. Alternatively, could you even consider leasing one? That would give you a much bigger choice of unit and would make it more affordable. Obviously, it's an ongoing cost for a couple of years, but it would make sure that you get something that is more than capable of the task in hand and should allow you to get a very decent laser unit. I know that Casio do some superb Laser units, but they are not necessarily the cheapest around.

Depending on your budget i would highly recommend purchasing a projector with an SDI input or a HDbase, we have gone for this and we are able to integrate this into our lighting setup as we are using ArtNet.

Just looking at the original post and some of the info provided thought i'd add my views. Disclaimer I work for BenQ so have a commercial interest but we are a forum sponsor.

 

I don't believe you will find the features you are looking for within your budget. £1000 is a pretty small budget for this kind of project (to do the job properly anyway)

 

Personally I would look at a laser projector. Very low maintenance (no bulbs or filters). Laser doesn't have the colour issues associated with LED or LED hybrid projectors either.

 

An 8m wide image from 10m is a 1.25:1 throw ratio so you would need to look for something in that range or buy a projector with an interchangeable lens.

 

If you can give up the electronic zoom and focus it would bring the cost down. Can the projector not be focused on installation?

It's been abandoned/pushed back twice since then. If we ever get the budget the plan is to spend about £6k on this project and kit out both senior and junior halls - new projector in senior with new screen, existing projector relocated to (smaller) junior hall with new screen. Makes and models TBD but I'm not even bothering to think about this until I get told I have the budget for it.
