Office 365 - What's Involved ?

Hi all,

 

A local authority used to look after the office 365 for schools but now they are stating that whoever looks after the IT for the school needs to be assigned global administration rights to look after the office 365 instead of them.

 

I would like to ask what else I need to be aware of that the local authority haven't informed us. What if something happens with the registered email domain, who would be contactable ? All we are aware is that it is for setting up email accounts but there may be more involved and what if there are problems.

We dont use Office 365 but I have tested it. Are you a primary school?

 

Its more than just setting up emails, you will have access to all the security including file security etc. Its a bit like a server in the cloud.

 

As for domains etc, I would get all that information from the LA, they might be routing all your MX records etc, or it could be an external company.

You have a huge amount of power with that from powershell scripting to accessing files on onedrive accounts as well as much more.

A lot you may not need to use but you can setup a huge amount of things with that like GDPR labeling and more.

Initially though if they have set things up you won't necessarily have to change many things. I can see why they want to get rid of the support overhead their end but I would ask if they can give any typical examples of things you would need to do which they handled for you right now (or they had to do in general for other schools)

Once you have a global admin account you really MUST use 2fa on those accounts as the risk is so high if they were compromised.

Having just requested global admin for ours this is what I like to hear

 

We had a very basic support offering from the LA hence why we require global admin (they wouldn't turn on mobile device security or allow me to delegate roles) so I doubt we're going to miss much.
