Based on their last ICO fine from January 2018, it is bound to be pocket change for Dixons Carphone. They will pay the fine and carry on as normal.

I reckon it's not going to be more than £500,000 this time.

It sounds like this occurred last year so will fined under the 98 DP Act which is max 500k. Not sure what they mean by "attempted to compromise" - if the details were encrypted then this would seriously mitigate the fine but its a second offence.

Since Dixons only discovered the hack last week shouldn't they be fined under the GDPR? Surely the date of the initial breach is irrelevant if the attackers still had access to Dixon's systems after 25th May 2018?

Dixons insists that it only discovered this latest hack a week ago and it has no connection with any previous incident.

You've lost straight away then, I believe it's being investigated as DPA rather than GDPR due to the date of initial breach.
