Hi,

We are trying to find some sort of software to alert people for certain issues.

Example - Fire alarm

- Bomb Threat

- Knife Attack ect

We are working in a school and the plan would be if someone hears or see anything. They will click panic button from a bit of software, that would alert every computer in the school. Example - Bomb threat please leave quickly ect. We will need the alert to pop up full screen and ASAP.

We have been using Snapcomms but this is popping up full screen but taking 5 minutes to pop up on the machines. We need it to pop up sooner.

Tried Little green button but we cant have what the issue is.

Any ideas?

Yeah, another for NetSupport Notify. It seems a lot of users on here have implemented it!

It works pretty well and pretty quickly!

Hi @lsissons93

NetSupport Notify lets you send out alerts quickly and easily, and also features an Emergency Response option to enable users to send out messages using a hotkey combination.

Feel free to PM me for more information.

Hi there!

Katie from Little Green Button here. We are actually building the functionality to raise bespoke alerts with the Little Green Button panic alarm at the moment. Our first roll out to interested customers will be in the coming weeks. Please feel free to message me for more info.

Thanks!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I was wondering how NetSupport Notify handles locked computers? I'm guessing not, however is it still able to display the alert over the lock screen?

The reason I ask is that the school have an enforced lock policy on all computers, therefore it's common in a lesson for a computer to be locked. Would the alert get go amiss?

Hi @gtg93

If no user is logged on to a machine, the Alert will appear over the login screen. If a user has locked their PC, then the Alert will appear when they log back in.

Thanks Tom,

I'm wondering if there's any way to show this over the lock screen or is this a limitation with Windows? The only reason I ask, is that if a member of staff isn't using their PC for the lesson (for example, Drama or music lessons where the machines are rarely used), and an alert is sent after the force lock time it won't be seen.

Most likely the solution would be used alongside another method, but have said I would ask this info for the SBM.

This is on our immediate roadmap to look at, and is currently scheduled to feature in the next release (date TBA).

Just trialling NetSupport Notify at our place.... it looks fairly straightforward.

@Tom_NetSupport, I don't suppose there's any chance of getting a trial key that allows more than 50 clients? We're definitely interested, but we want to do a whole site test first to see how good the coverage is going to be.

Thanks that's great - we'll probably hang-fire for this next update then trial it in a couple of classrooms to start with.

Not meaning to hijack this post, but i will :) It may sway decisions made or make us think about other features that the suppliers offer maybe?

Does anyone use the features in anger? Particularly Net Support Notify. what other uses do you use for the alert system? Reluctant to spend this money on a system, just in case there is a lock-down, bomb alert for example. I know it's like insurance, but it would be great to use it for other things that are useful

Our office staff love it as they can send a message to any member of staff that's logged on, regardless of location... and also see where they're logged on too... so they no longer need to go chasing staff for not doing their registers etc.

I believe it can be used for teachers in classrooms to quickly send alerts back to a predefined group in emergencies too, though we've not set that up (yet).

I also like the idea of being able to notify users of planned downtime / server reboots. Although a rarity, it means anyone on a PC can be told quickly.

thanks, some good ones there. I suppose this also comes down to how granular you want to get, who would maintain it and how much time it takes to keep it up to date!

It can take a bit of time to get the GPO's set up initially once you get your head round it, but I've not needed to do anything with it since then... so that's always a bonus!

Just wanted to provide an update on this. We will be releasing NetSupport Notify version 4 very shortly which will include the ability to display messages on PCs which have been locked.

Brill thanks - we've just got a new head who's changing the whole way the schools handles fire alerts etc. Once they've got everything ironed out I believe the school will be buying into this.

Maybe going off on a very slight tangent here, but surely in the event of an emergency, the very last thing that you wish to cause is panic.

Rather than using the words "Bomb Threat" or "Fire", it would be more prudent to display "Please move to the emergency assembly point immediately via the nearest available exit!"

The words "Bomb" and "Fire" cause panic, the last thing that you need in an emergency, so sometimes less disclosed the better. You can communicate the exact issue once everybody is safely out of the building. For a bomb threat, the assembly point should be at least 100m away from the building, and ideally your fire assembly point would be a similar distance, so they should really be the same locatons for both, so there is less panic caused.

Similarly for lockdowns, rather than telling people there is a crazed lunatic outside with a knife/gun/bomb, it is better to use something along the lines of "Due to an incident, the building has been temporarily secured for your safety. Please remain seated and await further instruction"

I do some security work in my spare time at large events and generally at those, they will use code words, rather than fire or bomb as it creates a much calmer and more manageable egress, which ensures that people tend to get out more swiftly than if everybody panicked an ran for the nearest door. Similarly for lockdowns, codewords are used. The people already inside are locked inside and don't need to know the full extent of the chaos that may be going on outside. Until it is appropriate to do so, less said the better.
