How to Sell Old Wireless System?

Quick Overview, we are a large primary school in Suffolk, UK currently replacing our DLINK Controller based wireless system with a new Aerohive Cloud managed network.

 

Just so you understand our old system would be great for a smaller school, with expansion our school has outgrown a shared access point wireless network and we are moving into a access point per class room setup.

 

A school with 10 classrooms or less could benefit largely from our current setup.

 

My question is as a school what is the best way to sell the old Access points and controller, we are not allowed to sell on auction sites and I am pretty sure most schools and business by now would already have a wireless system in place.

 

Has anyone here upgraded and been able to sell there old system?

Who says you can’t sell on an auction site? It’s possible there might be a policy that you can’t sell stuff ...to avoid any legal come back ..if it was not safe or whatever...but I don’t understand why one method of selling something should be singled out....

I highly suspect it'll be your best bet as most schools would likely stay clear of D-Link hardware; it's probably best targeted to small businesses

Donate it to the parents association and have them sell it on an auction site?

Unfortunately because we are under a trust they have a policy where we are not allowed to buy and sell of auction sites. This would of been my first go to if we where allowed.

 

Synaesthesia, your defiantly right. The system has failed us enough times when 30+ nodes are connecting to one access point, unfortunately roaming is not an option has the AP's are too far apart.

 

I have said to the Business Manger the best option is to Heat Map the school and start over.

If you think it would be well suited for a small Primary School and want to sell it you need to find website or forum specialising in Education and post it for sale on there listing what you're selling and what price you want. Then you can invoice the School and they can then pay using a Purchase order so it's nice and simple for all those involved.

The 2600 access points only support 25 clients or less. So no surprise if clients fall off those.

 

The 8610 will support a lot more clients...If clients fall off...its more likely to be something like because you have turned on band steering...and as useful as it might be on paper....as load increases on the 2.4GHz radio ...which clients often connect to if the access point is through wall or some distance away...or whatever, the access points drop the connection to encourage the access point to connect to 5GHz radio...which some don't like to do because the client then uses more battery power...and the 5GHz signal is weak....and so attempt another connection at 2.4GHz...only to be unceremoniously dropped.

30 laptop clients connecting to a single AP is not going to be a great experience. 30 clients in a single collision domain has a considerably detrimental effect on throughput. 30 tablets ...or even 60 ...is not too bad.

 

Gigabit wireless is only possibly when using wide channels...and typically you can't use wide channels in schools - because you would want more than 4 access points and co-channel interference. And multiple streams.....are often not supported by clients unless you buy high end devices....and only offer improvement when you have really good signal to noise (access point in that room). And speeds quoted are UDP...not TCP rates..

 

So generally you end up with somewhere between 100 and 200Mb/s shared between your connecting devices.

 

With a 1Gb/s switch, wired connections gives you 1Gb/s shared between the devices....a much better experience.

 

The point I'm making is that wireless is a not a good replacement for fixed ICT suites....or at least not for laptops running windows off a domain server.

I would suggest either the classified adverts on here (schools have no problems paying other schools) or try one of the refurbished IT suppliers such as BargainHardware / IT In Stock / etc
