We currently pay £2,000 a year for our school internet access.

 

We are with E2BN and have a dedicated 10Mbps line. - this has already been paid for so it's not coming from the rental of this.

 

Filtering is included in the free support.

 

All the software that they use is freeware.

 

Anyone got any ideas where this cost is coming from?

Last year?

 

£13k for 10mbit Leased line connection, webhosting, email, & webfiltering.

 

I'd guess you're paying for the servers the "free" software runs on.

You are paying for:

 

a) Servers

b) The services provided by the EMBC

c) The connection to the NEN/JaNet

d) The staff who work at the E2BN

 

Software may well be free, but it isn't free to operate.

Building on the recent Schools Licence between British Pathe, the Regional Broadband Consortia (RBCs) and UK partners, JANET(UK) has enabled direct access to the British Pathe Archive via the schools broadband interconnect to the JANET network.

The agreement between British Pathe and the RBCs allows schools free access to high-resolution digitised clips of news film dating back to the 1890s. The collection includes 3,500 hours of film and 12,000,000 stills. The Archive is also being made available to all schools in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales via the JANET network.

The connection, funded by DfES, links the archive database in Milton Keynes to the SuperJANET backbone via a high-speed link. This enables teachers and pupils to download media files with the speed and reliability that is essential for the use of these materials in the classroom. This development facilitates the use of moving images within schools in support of learning whilst also providing access to unique cultural and social resources.

 

The archive records 75 years of change from the death of Victoria to the birth of space travel. Society, culture, economics, politics and war are recorded with national and international stories appearing alongside regional and local news items. Reviews and documentary features are available as well as clips of unpublished film. Therefore, it represents unique opportunities for teachers and students alike to enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum.

Try being an independant school then complain about the cost of the internet, currently trying to convince them that we do need more bandwidth and £30K is the rough price for 10MB leased line.

Also free with the SWGfL (and quite possible every school). SWGfL gets Infomapper free as well.

RBCs can sign up for a number of NEN resources, the British Pathé library being one of these. The various NEN resources are usually hosted by one of the RBCs, for example AudioNetworks is hosted by LGfL.

 

Some LAs and RBCs sign up for additional resources as part of cost saving, such as Gigajam or Expresso.

 

Speak to your LA for more details about which resources are available and for more information you can also look at Teaching & Learning - The National Education Network. Each RBC will have a tool that allows you to search for NEN materials. The updated version for EMBC is presently in testing and will be available soon.
