witch Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Ayaz - I'm glad it is going OK. My main advice would be to definitely take LOTS of notes - I have a file both on paper and on the server containing info on how to do things. It is amazing how quickly you forget unless you do something every day
tmcd35 Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Ayaz - I'm glad it is going OK. My main advice would be to definitely take LOTS of notes - I have a file both on paper and on the server containing info on how to do things. It is amazing how quickly you forget unless you do something every day Here's a good tip, something I've just put in place here. A in-house wiki. All your network/server/user/howto/top-tip documentation in one handy searchable place that any member of the team can use and edit. Whenever we do something new, we put in the wiki for future reference. Buy a new machine - put the details in the wiki, New supplier - you guessed it, the details go in the wiki. Especially good as a virtual machine!
reggiep Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 If you don't know the staff members name you called always just call them Sir/Miss that's what I do whenever I am in a classroom with students about.
SpuffMonkey Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 On my first day in school - I started in a holiday period and they didn't tell me that they locked up early - I got locked in and then set the alarms off wandering about looking for an exit - caretaker and head had to be called to let me out - not good... Better than my first ever day though - working in a factory - I got sent down to the finishing shop (consisting of about 30 late middle aged women) to ask for "two black balls" - quite a shock to an impressionable 18 year old...

When I was in industry I remember a good few morons being sent to stores for a 'Long Weight/Wait'. Luckily they were so short staffed when I started nothing like that happened.
richard.thomas Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 My first job was in a kitchen, Most of the new staff got stuff like that pulled on them by the chefs... A funny one was getting someone to peel prawns outside (december + snow) because the heat of inside would damage the taste
