Something I've never seen before got me a bit stumped today. A server arrived with the two drives configured in RAID 1 (is that mirroring)? As I expected. It fired up and booted from USB into the 2016 installer.

2016 recognised the drives, but I installed the P410i driver anyway. This is how I did it on our other older servers.

So one partition is the drive. It's Drive 0 Partition 1 @ 279.4Gb and is marked as Primary.

It gives an error - 'We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files'.

So a search revealed going into the command line and clearning the disk etc etc, before trying it again.

I then get the error 'We couldn't install Windows in the location you chose. Please check your media drive. Here's more information about what happened 0x80300001"

So I left it to search some. Google not much help.

ANyone here seen it?

If he installer sees the drives I wouldn’t worry about installing the RAID driver. It’s probably the driver causing the confusion.

It saw the drives before I installed the driver - but still failed. I tried the driver to see if it fixed it.

Cheers

RAID 1 is mirroring yes (I always look at the 1 as a mirror)

I take it from your description that there were already existing partitions in place? Have you tried deleting any existing partitions and installing from there?

Do you have 2x physical drives in raid 1 mirror? if so you should only see 1x logical drive in windows setup. Sometimes if you dont have the right drivers loaded you can see the physical drives rather than the logical, and you get this sort of error.

If you're using the HP Install Assistant, you shouldn't run into any problems. When prompted you supply the Server 2016 ISO and the wizard should do the rest.

It sounds to me as if you're trying to do the install manually (which you can), but it's much better to do it the wizard way.

Thanks for the reply. Yes - only one drive I can see.

Cheers Michael - going to try that now with the ISO. The boot USB I created has not worked with the Install Assistant.

Hi Michael,

I've tried the Intelligent Provisioning option on the server with a USB stick and the ISO on there - but alas it's not worked. It doesn't see the ISO.

:-(

BIt stumped with this one. I should be able to install Server 2016. It's worked fine on our older 380Gen8s

Intelligent Provisioning is the way to go - I use an ISO emulator (essentially an external hard drive with additional options). It needs to be formatted as NTFS + MBR.

Normally you select the OS from the list, which then installs the correct drivers with your nominated ISO file.

Presumably Windows 10 can see the USB Stick and the ISO?

Evening @Michael,

I've formatted the USB stick with NTFS and put the Server 2016 ISO on there - which I downloaded from the Volume Licence site.

I put the usb stick into the server and boot into the Intelligent Provisioning service. I follow the screens/wizard and it sees my USB stick. However it does not see the ISO that is on there.

Do you "press any key" to boot from the USB memory stick? If so (then this might sound strange but it happens on a couple of our servers here), dont press any key - instead wait for it to ask the question again and then press any key!

Of course, if it only asks you the once then this wont help, but I've seen this on a couple of servers here where it asks you the question twice (in two different screen resolutions as the font size changes the second time) so it's clearly in some sort of different 'mode'.

Well - what a simple answer it was. Whilst reading through the Intelligent Provisioning user guide it mentioned an SD card install. Now, I don't use SD cards in my servers for the OS - but it got me thinking "What if....?" So I opened the server and there it was, an SD card - and one which was not being recognised by the OS.

This was a refurbished server from ICT-Direct and pre-built so I never thought to check the sd card slot.

Removing the sd card sorted it all out.

Thanks everyone for their help,

Gareth
