gopher_1999 Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 With the bubble on memory and GPUs I'm looking at buying a pre-built PC for home. Any recommendations/avoids?
Ksavage413 Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 What are you looking to do with it? Do you have any minimum specs you need? Is it just going to be for word processing/light internet usage, or will you be using it for gaming? If so, what sort? Just light programs like FTL, older games like Team Fortress 2 etc, or more modern and heavier programs like Far Cry 5, Final Fantasy XV, Witcher 3 etc.
Bedders Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 Laptop? Desktop? All-in-one? Purchase with a monitor/keyboard/mouse?
AMLinington Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I've purchased laptops directly from Dell before - it still performs well as a basic internet and desktop publishing machine. It struggles with anything more strenuous than Minecraft. My mother in law bought a Lenovo and it's like wading through molasses... There are some pre-built machines on E-Buyer that are worth a look too. Depends a lot on what you want I guess.
gopher_1999 Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 Hi. I was more looking for a reliable supplier. Don't want to through money into the ether at a fly by night company.
RichCowell Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 Scan - http://www.scan.co.uk - great systems, I've had my previous two home PCs and two school office PCs custom built from there, but they do pre-built too. 1
AMLinington Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 (edited) Hi. I was more looking for a reliable supplier. Don't want to through money into the ether at a fly by night company. Buying direct from Dell is pretty reliable and I have never personally had issues with Ebuyer - I buy most of my kit from them. I disagree with the SCAN returns policy. https://www.ebuyer.com/ I assume you thought I meant Ebay? Because I definitely did not - Ebuyer have been around for years. RichCowell Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I disagree with the SCAN returns policy. I can't comment on that as I've never had to return anything to them - and they're only 20 mins down the road from me so I'd return in person if I needed to... Their service and knowledge is excellent though.
angrycomputingteacher Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I've used Mesh computers in the past.

Have you not seen eBuyer's infamous Christmas photo...? www.theregister.co.uk/2013/12/24/ebuyer_rates_staff_on_returns_rejected Whenever I buy something from eBuyer (which itself is quite rare) I always make sure it is with a credit card. denzal2k4 Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Have bought parts from ebuyer for years, not had any issues though I think they use yodel for delivery so.....yeah. Also laptops bought from the dell outlet, have both been pretty much brand new no signs of wear that I can see, and they come with warranty, had an engineer in my house to swap a mobo with one of them. When you see one you want on Dell outlet buy it quick as they don't stay around long (as in hours not days) Certified Refurbished Dell Outlet Personal Notebooks, Laptops, Desktops and Tablets | Dell UK

No! Somehow I managed to miss this entirely!!!!
DeGrimmy Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 I bought my PC from Chillblast a good few years ago now. They had great support and a decent warranty. My PC has since been gutted and upgraded! My family have also bought PCs from Mesh a couple of times. They lasted a while.
Chris_ Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 I didn't need anything too flash so picked up a refurbished HP Elite 8300 (3rd gen i5, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD) and stuck a Nvidia 1050ti in it. Nice and nippy for everyday use and I can play games (maybe not the latest and greatest at max settings) without issue.
plexer Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 I recently bought an HP Z210 workstation from ICT Direct. Ben 1
