OVS-ES - Pupil Server CAL?

Hi

 

It is the time of year that I have to sort out our OVS-ES agreement. Lovely .

 

Anyway, I have requested prices based on our FTE for the Desktop pack, and also our student count for server CALs (as well as the server licences, sccm etc). One vendor has quoted for the student Server CALs, whereas another has come back and said that they are not required as the Desktop Pack covers this.

 

Does anyone know of the definitive documentation/guidance that would point me in the right direction? Each of the people who have been quoting are specialists in their field, so I don't know what we need.

Desktop pack covers Windows Server CALs

Desktop pack is Windows, Office and CALs (not Enterprise CALs though so check your needs).

If it’s for remote access I’m sure there is a charge. It’s such a grey area MS licensing. I’m sure my staff were covered but I had to pay for licensing cals for student to be able to use remote facilities!

We got a remote connector license for our students, sure this was covered on another thread a while back. Worked out lots cheaper for us for student remote access.

RDP needs to be licensed separately, and pupils aren't covered by your FTE count unlike the desktop pack. That one can get expensive quickly.

Yes remote services aren't standard so wouldn't be included in any basic package. If you purchase RDS CALS you need to be sure access is locked down or you could need more CALS than you expect.

 

The MS side of it isn't grey, it's when licence resellers create their bundles it gets confusing, and they don't always know what they're talking about either. MS documentation is actually pretty clear.

I was advised not to allow students to access RDP as this creates a world of licensing pain for the above reasons... If you students to access services remotely you need a robust VLE not RDP.

Its not that bad and as jack said if you get a decent reseller you are fine.

 

I have also used XMA for my licenses but recently had a chat with a guy from Capita who really knew his stuff.

Ours got renewed in Feburary. XMA were really helpful in breakdown of licensing and getting the right package

I recommend just getting as good an understanding as you can yourselves otherwise you don't know if what you're being told is right or not. I had a school being quoted for the wrong amount of WS2016 core packs and they broke down the quote to explain how they got to the number...they were wrong nonetheless.

 

Look at the MS licensing T&Cs they're not actually confusing.
