IE 11 Settings

Hi all,

 

I've got a primary school with a Server 2008 R2 server, with IE11 installed, but I can't see the settings in group policy. It only offers me "Internet Explorer 5 and 6", "Internet Explorer 7", or "Internet Explorer 8". I've downloaded the admx files and copied the to the PolicyDefinitions folder as detailed here;

Best way is to use RSAT from a Windows 8/10 computer. Have you added in the latest ADM Templates, I think this allows you to change settings but not proxy.

EDIT: After Reading the below comment, 3s-Gtech anwser is spot on with regards to 2008R2 not allowing you to manage any IE after IE 8

I'm not 100% sure on your setup or your level of knowledge, if you are using a central store or unsure then you may want to follow along. if you know you are not using a central store then regard this post.

 

To find out if you are unsure:

 

Go to your Domain controller and open Group Policy management.

Expand to the following: Forest -> Domains -> %Domain Name% -> Group Policy Objects.

Find a policy that has a Administrative templete and click it

in the policy change the tab to settings and expand Computer or user Configuration then expand Polices and then Administrative templete.

 

Just under the Administrative templete you might see "Policy definitions (ADMX files) retrieved from the central store"

 

If you are using a central store

 

Make sure you are coping the files to C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain\Policies on your domain controler or \\%Domain Computer Name%\SYSVOL\%FQDM%\Policies share instead of the folder located at C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions

 

to clarify, if you are using a central store, you need to copy the admx file to the root of the share and then copy the adml file into the LanguageCode folder

Server 2008 R2 doesn't directly allow you to manage IE 10 or 11 using GPP - however, you can modify the XML of the created Group Policy object in the sysvol, which will make it apply to later versions. https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/asiatech/2014/05/12/how-to-manage-gpp-settings-for-ie10-clients-on-windows-2008r2-dc/

You may also want to look at setting IE 11 setting for users using Registry Keys in Group Policy. I have inlcuded a microsoft page link that displays the Registry Keys you can add for IE 10 and 11.

As yac2016 said, you have to edit from a windows 10 machine using rsat tools
