You could look at the Ford Kuga - it's 4.5m long, but has more than enough leg room and boot space for you... with 20k available to you you could nearly buy a new one too. 0-60 on the 1.6 ecoboost is 9.4s and the 180bhp non ecoboost is 8.9s

 

The Kuga was my first though too, that or an estate Focus (which is 4560mm in length) ST for the acceleration you want, however the 1.5 ecoboost engine feels rather snappy too. I would recommend at least test driving this engine. A Mazda 3 2l sport could also be an option. Fitting 3 "average" sized adults in the back may be difficult in a car that is under 4.4m if you also want a big boot I'm fining. 4 fit comfortable in the Focus (I have one) If the 5th person is slim then they can sit comfortably in the middle.

I don't get why people say don't buy french, for the car nut maybe, but my 206 has served me well for the last 4 years and was only 2.5k!

Several years as a mechanic and breakdown mechanic. No, not all French cars are stinkers but they've been dogged by quirky design choices and dodgy electrics for years.
