Hi

We have a member of staff playing music at the work place daily and this sometimes causes inconvinience to other staff who working the same room. There are other staff in the same room who are working and focusing on important jobs and attending phone calls.

This is a hassle and please can you let me know if there are any policies staff must follow not playing music at work places.

Any sugessions much appreciated.

Playing copyrighted music via computer speakers, unless the person is completely alone and the sole listener, is considered a "public performance". Unless you can slap said member of staff with an immediate reason, such as your school does not have a valid music license or they're playing music via a service which does not allow you to do so under the terms (Spotify), then it's more of a line-management/AUP issue.

Remember that if they cry "well I'm in a school so it's educational" does not exempt copyright of a public performance if it's not directly related to the curriculum.

Get senior management on board and deal with it that way, and perhaps amend the acceptable use policy to include a line about playing music in shared workspaces so that you have policy grounds to stop them.

How loud is it if it's interfering with phone calls?

We have music playing in the tech office but it's on low to just get rid of the fact that it'd be sitting in silence without it, certainly can't hear it when on the phone.

No real policy, just peer pressure that enforces "in the interest of office harmony use headphones if N+1 people are in the room".

I assume you've already asked them to use headphones? We'd nip that in the bud pretty sharpish.

I would say this should fall under common curtesy and common sense... if that doesn't work could always put a present on their desk of some brand new, boxed ratty old headphones. ;)

Should be bounced up to SMT as it is not a technical issue or even an IT issue. To be brutally honest it shouldn't need to go that far, someone needs to politely ask them to turn it down/off or get some headphones. If they are rude or continue then a complaint needs to be put into management and they need to deal with it. As someone else mentioned, a policy isn't really needed it is a courtesy issue. Compare it to someone trimming their nails in the office or having loud conversations on speakerphone.
