Hyper-V Checkpoints

Morning All,

 

I have a number of checkpoints on the server, I'm just wanting to double check the merge function. I want to keep the server running as is, I see the delete checkpoint tree. But does that merge the checkpoints.

 

I'm no expert at Hyper-V ...

The short answer is yes it should, the longer answer is generally you shouldn't manually ever delete them as they should merge back together if they're temporary ones from backups etc, or was this one someone actually meant to create?

 

If it's temporary ones normally the best action is shutting down the machine and letting it merge itself back down, obviously when it's out of hours etc.

Deletion of checkpoints is just the same as merge.....depending on how many checkpoints you have it could take sometime to merge also...

For unknown reasons (probably accidental clicks), I have a number of checkpoints on the domain controller and file server at one site. Just need a sanity check.

 

 

If I just "Delete Checkpoint Subtree", this should merge everything into a single VHD and everything will be as it is TODAY, right? Should this be done with the VM shut down?

 

Ditto on the file server?

Yes, delete will merge all the way to ‘Now’. You don’t want to use checkpoints on a DC from what I remember - winding back to them would only work if they’re the only DC, so no use keeping them.

 

VM doesn’t need to be off.

 

File server the same, though you can checkpoint those fine.

 

I’ve never used the sub-tree function - but it just removes the whole tree back to now instead of one checkpoint.

Unless you are on Windows 2008, you can do it "live".

Thanks, folks. Going to have to push this job back as the workmen just turned off the wrong circuit breaker and our UPS needs a new battery. I don't want to risk that happening mid merge!
