Hello,

 

What would say is the best model to go for in general? Most of my cameras will go in corridors.

 

Is there a vandal proofed smoked option so pupils can't see the direction of the lens?

We have the DS‐2CD2125FWD‐I in all our indoor locations (apart from some old QVIS cameras) and are very pleased with them. The wide-angle lens gives brilliant coverage and the image quality is spot on. I would say they are vandal proof, but you can see the lens through the dome.

That camera does have a vandal proof option according to the specs

 

We have all turrets, for the better ir performance and ease of maintenance outside. No cover. We've only had tampering on one in the 6th form study. The camera is a 2.8mm and mounted in a corner so 100% coverage.. the culprit was on camera.

 

I wonder why they don't make domes with mirrored coatings

There are so many options, it's confusing! To save money I'm going to buy the cameras ourselves (through HV approved distributor) and have a local AV company install.

 

One supplier quoted model DS-2CD2342WD-I which is a turret. Does this look a good option? Is the DS‐2CD2125FWD‐I still a current model as I do like the look of this. What's the difference between this and the turret?

The newer models use H.265+ ...that codec has much better compression, saves a ruck of disk space, and offers better performance of course.

It's recommended to dial back the frame rate to 10fps, but I found 15fps+ was easier on the eyes.

I had our system set to motion detect but it was missing some activity, which is a widely reported issue online. Now I have it set to continuous during school hours and everyone is happy. With 55 cameras all set with pretty high frame rate and maximum resolution (a 50/50 mix of 3mp and 5mp cameras) we've still not filled up 7 of our 8x 4Tb drives (since August 2017).

The dome design attracts condensation and obscuring drips. Not a problem on the turrets, plus the peripheral layout of the IR emitters is too close to the lens and can cause flare in domes. The turret IR emitters are further away from the lens and give better performance.

That turret at 12mm is extremely narrow vision. We have a couple of cameras pointing down a drive that are 6mm. We chose 4mm for corridors and 2.8mm for corners.

2.8mm - Horizontal field of view: 108°

4mm - Horizontal field of view: 86.4°

Positioning away from light sources is best if you can... on window walls for example. Too close and too far away from your subject is not great.

Looks good. Great in the corner of your average sized room. Yes I'd choose that as a good general camera.
