Office manager yesterday asked me if I knew whether our perfectly capable cross cut office shredder had GDPR certification, because she was about to buy a similar one to replace with a certificate of GDPR compliance. The salesman who cold-called her convinced her this was mandatory for all shredders before May. Not a shredding service, just an bog-standard ordinary office shredder. I asked her not to but I suspect next week there'll be a new one sitting in the office, and the old one will be in the skip.

I read an article the other day which specified a level for shredder compliance. Just had a quick look and can’t seem to find a recommendation that isn’t on a shredder sales site...

 

P-3 rings a Bell although the first site I’ve found today suggests p-4 and above

I've no idea why everyone hates salespeople. Hey, salespeople who aren't scum, if you don't stop the rest of them you'll be painted with the same brush, get your industry together already.

 

On the plus side I get to spend time doing cool stuff with encryption, and have an excuse to force no usb drives

Funnily enough we had a new secure shredding service come in recently with GDPR cited as the reason. No idea why a damn good shredder here and there wouldn't have done the job just fine...

 

The standards and ideals behind it are from the existing DPA... not GDPR.

My "favourite" so far is that schools must move from Google Apps to Office365, because Google aren't in the EEA so aren't GDPR-compliant.

We have also had an increase in sales calls from WEEE recyclers (which is annoying, as I was already getting at least one call/email a week) and shredder salesmen.

I don't think you have legal grounds for drinking it, so you need to ensure you have the cow's consent to process its milk...
