Big changes coming to macOS Server

Just to point out that this is a very flawed analysis.

1. Deployment on Windows is included free if you have a server (WDS)

2. The idea that the OS is included for free on Mac is a little bit nonsense - the cost is included in the price. Just like it is when buying a Windows laptop from Lenovo or HP.

3. They include pricing for both Intune and SCCM as managament, but also include AV as a cost - when SCEP is included with SCCM.

4. Somehow, they also say that support and helpdesk costs are lower with a mac, which is a little absurd, and is based on anecdote. I'm not sure IBM is particularly clear with their stats, considering how much restructuring they've been doing lately!

So, I would say, costs-wise, they are actually about the same.

Every single one of those points can be shot down in flames just by watching Fletcher Previn from IBM's slides. I'm not going to bother linking them if you prefer to ignore what real and what is not then that's up to you...

Thanks @Stevecee I've just signed up for the free version of Mosyle to see how that works... Have you then tried to sync the macs to Azure AD at all?.. we have a mix of windows, apple and Gsuite

sorry haven't tried Azure AD, but would be interested to see how you get on!

im not sure how you can shoot down 1 & 2 wds is part of server 2008 onwards and as long as you have a server is free (yes it costs time/money to learn but what dosent and its not hard) now granted if you dont have a server its a cost but in that situation you wouldnt be looking at a mac server anyway.

2 however you slice it you pay for mac os one way or another its either included in the cost like a windows laptop or given free with a mac id argue the difference is irrelevant you cant buy a mac without mac os you cant buy macos without a mac, by that logic you could argue the hardware is free and macos is just very expensive

3 sccm in some flavours (possibly all i cant remember) does come with av so you can argue you dont need a separate one

4 in the real world its hard to quantify you get a room full of idiots on macs youll get more support calls than a room full or normal people with pcs on average. my experience is macs generate less issues per device (but the ratios are so skewed i wouldnt take that as a useful stat) but when they have an issue its more time consuming/frustrating to deal with

Let me know how you get on, i'll be signing up to every Mac MDM going soon! Mosyle and jamf are the ones to catch my eye so far. Will be giving Zuludesk a go also!

After recommendations on here I also tried Zuludesk. It's only on a very small roll out to iPads and I have no experience of other MDMs but I really like it. (You can trial it on up to 30 devices for a month)

* Edit devices not iPads - iOS, macOs and tvOS

Huh? How can you shoot down that WDS is free? Or that MacOS is included in the machine cost (the only difference between Mac and PC is that Apple is the manufacturer of both on their devices, Windows PCs are generally made by a third party, so some itemise it, most don't).

AV is included in SCCM, so again, huh?

And number 4 - it is a very difficult thing to measure. IBM have been making a lot of people redundant, and have been consolidating its workforce back into its various offices rather than letting them work remotely. So, it is difficult to get an actual comparison, as the environment they were supporting before is different in more ways than 1.

So can any MDM deploy update to OSX, install software from dpkg's, and deploy from VPP?

Well in theory yes! I would say they way that it does it differs between MDM Jamf (CASPER) has more Mac OS functionality at the moment, but the things you list are available through Zukludesk (not sure about update to High Sierra though).
