Gist are great for little scripts like a single PowerShell script. Seriously check it out, just a click and ctl + v away.

 

If its in production it should be under version control, no matter how simple it is. It can really help with diag when something "randomly" breaks, which is going to happen with Capita's PowerBI "solution". Git diff the production scripts via the latest code in git - oh look it's saying the batch file has ` rather then '. The alternative is you spend hours debugging or have lots of bk \ bak \ JIC \ old folders

Yes as far as I have understood, if you publish behind a login or walled garden, you have to pay up, otherwise for free anything you publish is public.

 

Just to check - as far as I can see everyone that wants to view behind a login also needs a Pro license. Is that correct? From the start of this thread, I thought people were saying that one user (e.g. data manager) needs a license to create for the rest of staff to see (for free).

 

I know Google Data studio is a bit featureless compared to PowerBi but at least it is free for everyone to view or create.

Yes, Pro license at like £20 for the year per year. I believe Bromcom are basically sharing the logging as far as them integrating into their MIS system. I suspect you'll spend more then that in wages @ghanel.

If money's super tight you could create a free powerBI account, publish there and give the powerbi login details to a set of users who are all authorised to see all the data published.

 

Or you get your DM to publish the same BI desktop file to a group of users' free accounts. As @matt40k rightly points out tho - going down that route will soon cost you more in labour than a handful of pro licences as every change to the source file will need to be upload separately to those accounts

I am trying to build a dashboard, but don't want users accidentally dragging, dropping or deleting anything. I know it is possible when using the licenced version, but I will be sharing the actual file and not publishing to web.

Google is sending round in circles!

 

Any help would be appreciated.

Could you share your login details to app.powerbi ? That way users can interact with a (non editable) web dashboard but you don't need to spring for a paid licence.

No. It's kinda the point people would interact with the interactive reports

 

Like others have said, license costs are peanuts, give them a demo on your machine. If they want it, check if the school has a license agreement, it use to be you could add things mid year then pay at renewal time - and tbh the pro licenses would prob disappear among the other costs.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I agree £1.70 per user is peanuts in the grand scheme of things, but as an SSU I don't like the idea of asking school's to fork out more money!

 

One more question, if a school is on google mail, how easy is it for them to set up a Microsoft Education account, in order to buy the cheap licenses.

Are they all Google Apps - Chromebooks and all - no Windows \ Office etc?

sorry for the late reply Matt, it's a busy week! The Schools are currently only on google for email, so the link you sent is the answer!

 

Though we do have a school who want to be fully google, they are keeping a windows server and a few PC's + RDS, for now, just so they can continue using SIMS. (I don't think they will be sticking with SIMS for too long though, as they want to move away from microsoft all together)

 

Finally, I think to answer my own question, without asking schools to spend money on a license, the solution will be to store the dashboard in a read-only folder on a shared drive!

If so schools would only need to pay for one pro licence to publish the dashboard and then they can invite as many read-only viewers to it as they want without them having permission to change anything or needing to have lots of pro licences.

clarification - Viewer role requires a Pro license or for the content to be in Power BI Premium.

To publish content to Premium capacity, you must also have a Power BI Pro license. Therefore, the minimum cost of entry is $4,995 (P1) plus $9.99 (Pro) for a total of$5,004.99 per month...

There I thought that. It's a premium only features. It's a bit messy, but the idea is like SQL Server licensing - you either pay for hardware or per user. Premium had a weird thing with apps or workspace needing a Pro license still and they've not fixed it so people can view reports and interact with them - still need a Pro license to edit.

 

 

Pro \ free uses shared environments, Premium is using a dedicated environment. Power BI embedded is basically Premium but you pay per hour and is designed for people like Capita \ Bromcom basically selling PowerBI reports.

@Norphy i know i'm really late to the party here but any chance of you sharing that Powershell please? just setting up the command reporter here and have used the batch file but I think powershell could be better to get the reports out into the office 365 environment (sharepoint would be fabulous!), am i right in my thinking?
